In the wake of the nationwide recall of eggs for contamination with salmonella, many consumers may be wondering what types of eggs are healthiest and safest to buy?
More than 90 percent of U.S. eggs come from caged hens. These birds have a space smaller than the size of a sheet of paper to move around, and live in filthy conditions. Aside from animal welfare concerns, that's bad for our health, too, Pennsylvania State University shows, because researchers recently found eggs raised on pasture are much more nutritious than eggs from their caged counterparts.
6 things food industry execs aren't telling you
Penn State's study, published recently in the journal Renewable Agriculture and Food Systems found that pastured hens—ones kept outside on different pastures where they can exhibit natural behavior and forage for bugs and grasses—boasted higher vitamin and omega-3 fatty acid levels when compared to their commercially fed, battery-cage-kept counterparts. Eggs from pastured hens contained twice as much vitamin E and 2.5 times more total omega-3 fatty acids as the eggs from caged birds contained.

Not to mention the anti-biotics these chickens are loaded with, which makes the consumer of the "product" be it meat or eggs more resistant to anti-biotic treatments when in ill state of health.
And that goes for all factory raised animals, cows, goats, pigs, and the lot. I couldn't believe when i heard a factory cow only lasted 4 years!! A normal one has life time of about 20 years, but they impregnate the cow, over and over again to extract milk, that it dies off early. Don't scorn at the treatment alone.
Because when any creature is under stress it will produce excessive amounts of hormones which can make them aggressive, and these hormones end up in the meat and in the stomach of ill informed consumers and you wonder why people are depressed, over stressed and angry.
It is common knowledge that babies from NZ and Aus have the highest rates of ear infections, and these countries take pride in dairy and formulas are loaded with dairy.
Highest Consumption of Dairy products are found countries like Holland, Norway, Switzerland. And here's an interesting statistic that coincides perhaps. The very same countries also have the highest amounts of Bone related disease and fractures. And yet we are told to drink more milk to have stronger bones? That's what I mean about misinformation.
These industries are big, think of the costs, you give the animal cheap produce and drugs so it doesn't get sick of the stuff that's given as "feed”, keep the temperature low so no energy is wasted in cooling off, give growth hormones, keep them standing on one place all the time so the meat is tender, separate the males from females so no energy is spent even in “Hello’s” and focus it on growth and size alone. Advertise. Business is well.
Next time something like SARS, AVIAN FLU, SALMONELLA, and whatever that was about pigs. Comes about remember, it’s nothing to do with the poor animals. It's the treatment they get. Why is it so difficult to make vaccines for these, because viruses are growing immune from overuse.
And people wonder about not enough micronutrients in their produce? Pull the other leg!!
Hope that adds to the excellent info presented by ED

I couldn't agree with you more.... we have a small farm in Bali and no pesticides or chemicals pass through the gate... when we bought chickens the feed provided was laced with hormones to make them grow quickly... apparently that is the way things are done these days... we replaced the hormone feed with natural feed and a bit of patience :)
