The dread and fear that can come with a cancer diagnosis have their roots in its killer nature: It's the No. 2 cause of death in Americans, second only to heart disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Even when diagnosed early and attacked with the latest treatments, it still has the power to kill.

Totally agree with you Celerkines. Given it is such a deadly disease, we should also focus on prevention and living healthily. However, there's so many articles of what may or may not cause cancer and I'm confused on what to eat and what to avoid.

I agree with celerkines and Retired. While certain tests might help detect cancer earlier, the sad fact is that they are still detective rather than preventive/ predictive in nature. And unfortunately, the factor called 'stress' cannot be measured, and therefore, its role in causing health disorders cannot be measured or conclusively proven. For those opposed to radiation and medication, it's worthwhile exploring alternative medicine such as the vegan diet and meditation.

Here are some more tips to avoid cancer.
Stay active. Inactivity and obesity are linked to cancer. Half an hour of exercise a day will significantly help your odds.5) Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. The American Cancer Society recommends at least five servings each day. In general, the most colorful fruits and vegetables have the most nutrients.
Limit the amount of red meat and processed meats in your diet, and make sure the meat you do eat is lean.
Avoid deep-fat frying. Instead, use low-fat cooking methods like roasting, baking, broiling, steaming or poaching. Also, choose low-fat or non-fat milk and yogurt.
Limit your alcohol consumption or avoid alcohol altogether.9) Protect yourself in the sun. Wear sunscreen to limit your exposure to damaging ultraviolet rays.10) Girls should get the HPV vaccine before they are sexually active to help prevent cervical cancer.

If you think about, much of what we do is un-natural.
People evolved as hunters/gathers and lived that way for hundreds of thousands of years. Lots of walking, lots of hard physical work, quite a bit of running, eating fresh fruits, roots, a little meat.
Now we go to buffets and sit in front of computers all day, drive to work and expose ourselves to air pollution and water pollution, smother our bodies with industrial chemicals in the form of cosmetics - seriously what did we expect?

Death cannot be avoided. There will always be a biggest killer. If it's not heart disease, then it's cancer. If it's neither of those, then it will be something else. We're already living for longer than at any time in the past, so obviously we're not doing too badly. Yes, live a healthy life as far as possible, but don't worry too much, because in the end, something will still get you.
