Why does '[MDs do] everything it can to turn oatmeal into yet another bad choice'?
Given our situation, and to go slightly off topic- I do not see anything wrong with genetically modified food, surely it offers all the answers for the future? Perhaps those in doubt of it should try to see the situation through the lens of the developing world.

McDonalds' food is fast, cheap and consistent. I am allergic to MSG, so eating in Chinese restaurants in HK is a little risky. Even when I am assured by the restaurant that no MSG is in the food, more than half the time it turns out that I have a negative reaction. Restaurants often mean that they don't add extra MSG to the food, but MSG may be part other ingredients. In my case, I react badly regardless of who put the MSG in the food. I think most Chinese restaurants really don't know whether MSG is actually in the food. While I dislike even the smell of MDs' food, I have never had a negative reaction. On many occasions while traveling, I could at least fill my stomach at MD without worrying about my health.
My worst MSG reaction ever was in a Pizza Hut in Shanghai, so I completely avoid Pizza Hut. Fairwood and KFC are also pretty consistently MSG free.

Calling MickeyD's "Food" is like calling a hunk of granite a "rare jewel" - simply doesn't work.

umm, basker 25~
there is msg in mcdonalds food. KFC is one of the worst offenders. the list of fast food places that use msg in various forms goes on and on. you cannot have 'food' that is sold so cheaply, prepared that quickly, and left to sit for that long without using cheap flavour enhancers.
this is one of many links.

these places are poisoning our children, robbing them of much needed nutrition and assisting them to a path of obesity.
its one thing as adults to choose to eat this crap but what are parents thinking feeding this stuff to their kids?

Thanks madam x for the link about msg. It is one of the best websites I have seen on the subject. I'm sure it will help me understand some bad reactions I get when eating out.

I was at an insurance seminar and they mentioned that having a mcdonalds in the local area increases the levels of heart diseas, cancer, stroke, and I forgot what else. Insurance companies charge more if there's a mcdonalds where you live because they are more likely to have to pay for your heart surgery, chemo, etc.

what about all the butter and mayonaise you find in certain sandwich places in and around town ? is that healthy ? I agree that McDs isn't great, but i am willing to bet that all of the other options for a quick feed on the run are just as bad !

It was at an insurance industry seminar, not something I read somewhere. I think it might have actually been for life insurance not health insurance but I can't remember, sorry. Also they used mcdonalds as an example but yes it's probably the same deal for any fast food. I'll look around for a link but there are plenty of papers showing that life expectency is reduced by consuming fast food, and that healthcare costs rise in geographic corrolation to the prevailance of fast food restaurants, here's a paper showing it increases the risk of diabetes and obesity http://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(04)17663-0/abstract
I'll ask around and see if there's any solid info about insurance companies charging more in areas with more fast food joints.

Be sensible and eat all unhealthy food in moderation knowing the consequences; the odd Big Mac. won't kill and if you follow everything everybody says, life wouldn't be worth living!

Yes, the key is moderation. I love MD's sundae and I eat it occasionally. It's yummy and makes me happy. Of course, we also have to eat lots of healthy food at the same time.
