Doctors and Private hospital

Hi,

This might be a silly question but do doctors in charge you more in accordance to the room you are staying in?

I was admitted for surgery in one of the private hospitals and I opted to stay for 1 night (day of the surgery) in a private room. I have now received a bill for the surgery, hospital charges etc.

The fees for the surgeon and anaethesist is definitely much higher than what the surgeon initially quoted me. The visitation fees (twice) I see are the charges equivalent to the room charge but is it usual for specialist /surgeon's fees to be also in line with the room you are staying in?

I am sorry this is the first time I have had to stay in the hospital and so have no idea how it works.

Thank you.

This is generally how they charge. When ever posible I would suggest that you ask for an estimate before admission. The hospital has prices on the website and if not listed can arrange an estimate and let you know the room rates so that you can have an idea of what the doctor may charge.

I know the room rates but it is the doctor's/specialist charges(fees) that I am unsure of. Just wanted to know if their charges depends on the room you stary in for example, the fees are less if you stay in a shared room (twin) rather than a single room. I was charged much more for his fees than what he quoted me. At that time when I decided to go for surgery I had not decided on the room yet. I only decided on the room when I registered at the hospital for surgery and have now received a bill. Appreciate any advice how it works.

Thanks.

Yes doctors fees are linked to room chosed (at least in maternity they do). I would go back to the doctor and question why you were charged higher, and when he/her says 'because of the room type' then argue about lack of transparency and information about the process. Perhaps you can negotiate a discount, based and the differency between the quote and actual charge.
