Yoghurt is high is 'good' bacteria and can help rebalance your digestive system particularly if you have been taking antibiotics. It is also high if calcium and tastes nice, but otherwise doesn't provide any other health benefits.

But doesn't youghurt have lactose in it? I have a mild lactose intolerance and have to avoid milk-based products which is a right pain! Out of interest (and you may not be interested!) I thought I had an Irritable Bowel (IBS) but through the wonders of the internet, I stumbled across this really helpful video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8V81uwYDa0Q

that pointed me in the direction of checking I didn't have a lactose allergy... I checked, I did!

I love youghurt too, dammit :-(

You can get lactose free milks and yoghurts, they used to have them in Parknshop

But for the ones who can have milk products, you can buy LIVE yoghurts and yoghurt drinks called yakult, which are supposed to work by the live yoghurt helping you to produce natural (good) bacteria in the bowel. The companies producing these products 'swear' by the properties, I personally don't know because I have a severe lactose intolerance.

I don't know much about medicine since I'm not a doctor or anything, but I found this article quite helpful and it might answer your question!

It says "Lactobacillus and Bifidobacteria species (which is found in yogurt) and prebiotics...enhance the body's own natural internal cleansing process."

..So it sounds like in general it's good for your body whether you're sick or not.

There is no doubt the naturally occurring probiotics found in yoghurt and yoghurt drinks is very beneficial to health at anytime, however it is especially important post surgery and illness, especially if antibiotics or cytotoxic drugs have been taken. There is a great article that explains this-

Probiotics are a much stronger and effective source of the good bacteria and many are lactose free. They can make a huge impact on intestinal and immune health.

Another thing that will be very beneficial for helping the body recover after illness and prevent further illnesses such as colds and flu occuring is Vitamin C. When are our body's defenses are down after surgery, illness or antibiotics colds and flu can be very damaging and hard to recover from. Taking a food or berry based supplement of 1000mg of Vitamin C (more when sick) can help the body recover rapidly and has many other potent benefits such as helping the body detoxify from pollution and medication toxicity, stress reduction and reducing inflammation.

You can buy Vitamin C and Probiotics online and the products will be at your door within 2-3 days. I highly recommend Camu Camu which is under the Vit C section. It really works!!
