Dressing for a Cocktail Party?

When you have an invitation to a Cocktail Party what do you wear exactly?


It has a 7.30pm start so it's not afternoon..it's evening...


It's not smart casual..it's specifically cocktail....


Would pants still be ok for a lady to wear? Or should i wear a very formal dress? i do not wear formal dress before , i usually wear simple t-shirt and pant , really do not know how to choose formal dress , my friend have bought many karen millen dress from : www.karenmillen-coats.com before , so i want to try karen millen dress,can you give me some suggestions which dress to choose? And for a guy - would they wear a suit?Where i can buy the most nice suit?

In the West, if you are invited to a Cocktail Party which means you should dress up. The degree of dressing up is of course depends on the party itself. The dress code ranks from smart casual, to cocktail party dress or long evening dress.


I am sure it is safe to say that this dress code is the same around the world.


I gather from what you said, you prefer the casual wears of trousers and T-shirt. Well, I am afraid you will have to dress up for this party!!


My advice to you is if you have got it, flaunt it and if you haven't then hide it. For example, if you have a nice pair of legs then wears a short dress with a pair of high-heel shoes so you can show off those nice legs. If you don't have a large chest, then don't wear off the shoulder dress as you don't want the top to be hanging loosely.


I have had a look at the Karen Millen website you stated. I took a caluclation guess that your are in your 20 to early 30 and on this assumption, I have chosen 3 dresses for you to choose from. Of course, you will have to try on all of them to see which one suits you best.


1. In page 3 of the 2011 Casual Dress section. A casual dress in Multi colour, (white dress with red flowers), product no. 75/96. Cost 839.93. Definitely NO Belt. If the waistline is to big, then I suggest you sew in the waistline.



2. In page 1 of the Shoulder Dress section. A party dress in Mult. A white dress with red and black flowers. Prouct no. 8/118. Cost 827.01


3. In page 1 of the Shoulder Dress section. A casual dress Red (it looks more orange colour in the website which is actually better and also my favourite out of the 3 colours that are on offer), product no. 24/118. This dress also comes in pink, product no. 70/118 and purple, product no. 80/118. Both of which can be viewed in page 3. The cost for this dress is 807.62

This is my favourite out of all three dresses. It also more suitable for evening wear than the other two.


I don't know how long all 3 dresses are on you or any other dress that you choose on your own, but do make sure the length should be 2 to 3 inches above your knees because unless your are very tall with long legs, knee-length dress and skirt tend to make the calves look big and chunky.


To answer your question about men. Yes, guys always wear suit to cocktail party and again it depends on the party itself so to determain how posh the suits need to be.
