hi,
my husband is suffering from ulcerative colitis-a disease that causes inflammation to the colon. If the disease is active, the patient has bloody stools from 5-15 times per day if serious, diarrhea, abdominal pain, cramps, loss of appetite, weight loss, vomitting etc.
my husband is right now in remission due to taking steroids and another drug called azathioprine prescribed by his Gastro doc. But these drugs cause lots of side effects.
It may be difficult for someone who doesn't know much about this disease to understand what I am trying to ask here. does anyone here suffer from ulcerative colitis? Fecal Transplant is being done for this disease in the U.S.I was wondering if anyone knows any clinics here in hk that can do Fecal transplant for my husband. We talked about this with his GI doc but the doc simply laughed us out of his office by saying it doesnt work. But i have a hope that it can work. even if it doesn't,there wont be anything at lose as fecal transplant wont cause any serious side effects if we have a healthy donor.but these strong drugs cause lots of terrible side effects.so fecal transplant is highly preferable nowadays.
Pls tell me if there is any clinic here in hk that can do it.

Hi.
I think you mean bowel transplant, (fecal-relates to faeces which is the waste produced from the bowels)
I have never heard of bowel transplant when I was in Uk, and if it has been done in the US it must be a very new proceedure, and would be very difficult as there would be lots to attach in complete bowel transplant, plus the difficulty of finding the donor.
I do empathise with your husband, it is a very uncomfortable and debilitating condition to have.
I don't know of any sufferers here in Hk, but should imagine there are many, if there is any group for ulcerative colitis or Chrohns which is similar then the CAB-which is Citizens Advice Bureau will be able to put you in touch, there number is
2815-5444,, and email cab@cab.org.hk,, they also have a website which is
www.cab.or.hk They are a very helpful advice for all kinds of things, good luck.

Hi Susie1,
Thank you for reading my post and giving it a thought to reply. Sorry I don't mean bowel transplant. I mean fecal bacteriotheraphy. It means collecting stool from a healthy donor then mixing it with saline and inserting it into the rectum of an ulcerative colitis patient's anus via colonoscope. It is commonly done for Clostridium Difficle patients but now it is being done for UC patients also. I talked to my husband's GI last time but he simply laughed us out of his office by saying "If i were you,i wouldnt do it." People just seem grossed out by this but they dont give it a second thought to think it can actually give someone a healthy life back and save them from strong drugs with terrible side effects. I don't know who else to talk to about this so I decided to post it here to let people know more about it so that word can spread around and doctors can do research on it instead of just saying a big NO to things like this.

If this is autoimmune. It has something to do with the large intestine acting like the skin due to sensitivity. In chinese medicine the skin is associated with the lung. The inner surface of the body, like the intestines is the large intesting generally. The lung and large intestine connect (think of the body as a donut). The internal surface is more sensitive. The large intestine literally has become sensitive to some things like gluten in celiac disease. The steroids are bad. Herbally you can try something safe called triphala. It is a ayurvedic herb and will help to "pacify the vata". Vata is air, and air is the lung. Large intestine is the internal skin like I explained. Its a safe formula and you can see if it keeps him in remission. If it is autoimmune you'll have to wait till there is a viable therapy. The bad guys are the autoantibodies. Basically the immune system is attacking things the body needs. Beta cells, mylean sheath, in diabetes and MS as the case may be. My info may help you understand the situation.
