please help, wife's mutliple health issues

Hi All

I am posting here to get some help regarding some health issues my wife is facing

Some background

. She is in her late twenties, we have an active 3 years old kid at home.

. She has a relatively immunity since the time I know her, especially when it comes to sore throat, flu, allergies and has mild asthma at times.

. We have a full time helper at home and she is a SAHM. She has been complaining of the hectic work for past few years (off and on). I think the work load is there but nothing that is unmanageable as we have a fulltime helper.

. Things have aggregated since last 1 years, when she suffered a miscarriage in 12th week. It was a major setback for both of us and it took time for us to come out of it.

Current situation:

. for past 5-6 months, she has been complaining of extreme fatigue, pain in body, disturbed sleep. She finds it too hard to manage the household work and I can see the fatigue is increasing with time.

. She also has low grade fever (~37.5 – 37.6 ) every few days and with this she complains of pains, tiredness, fatgue. She does wake up 1-2 times at night to feed out kid and then wakes up around 10 am in the morning, still complaining that she did not get enough sleep. Crying that she cant handle the work etc etc

. Mood swings and sign of depressions have been increasing. Often complaining of how small out apartment is (by HK standards it still a 1100 sqft), how bad the life we are living, etc etc. The mood gets better when we go out (over weekends), eat out etc.

. She did not loose any weight , she had gained with the pregnancy last year. She has infact gained more weight. Eating habits are not that good

. She does not do any phsycial excericse. Complains that she is too tried to do anything. This is a a vicious cycle and I have been unable to break it.

I did some research and found these causes for these symptoms. Personally I feel it’s the chronic fatigue syndrome. Or it can be depression too (but it does not cause low grade fever I think).

Symptom Search for General weakness, Fatigue, Low grade fever on Yahoo Health

I know this is not a medical forum but I REALLY need your help here. Please if

. If you have suffered or know anyone who have suffered from these symptoms, please share your experiences

. If you know of a doctor who is very good and experienced with such treatments, please let me know. I am sorry to say but majority of HK doctors won’t even listen to the long story above and such diseases as CFS are easy to be misdiagnosed. There is some issue cauing depression/mood swings or the depression is causing other ailments….

This is really affecting my personal life, the environment at home is stressed at times. I have tried my level best to help her with household chores, cheer up her mood etc but I think we really need some medical help now.

Hi,

There are a few blood tests she can do - hormones, minerals and food allergy. It can be oestrogen dominance, adrenal fatigue (mainly from stress) and/ or CFS.

She might also be gluten-intolerant, hence the gut inflammation and slight fever, as well as low energy. You might think it is trivial but the food we eat makes a huge difference in how we feel.

Hope it helps.

i feel for you. your wife has real issues and i would personally recommend the IMI institute in Central since they mix traditional western with alternative/chinese medicine. i think a combination could work.

a few basic observations though: why is your wife waking up 1-2 times at night with a 3-year old? if the kid is thirsty, put a water bottle into her bed and let the kid handle themselves. else she should not have the wake up. this is a pretty basic point which could immediately help her fatigue issues (just imagine - and assuming - to get up 1-2/night for 3 years would be a shocker for me even if i can sleep until 10am...). sleep is very fundamental to human beings and it's not just duration but also quality

at a basic level you can also do the diagnosis test on www.orientalbalance.com. could give an indication too

bsc1280,

Not sure if it's encouraged to recommend any doctor here but you can try OT&P who has clinics in Central and Wanchai.

Hi Bsc, I was in the same condition as your wife ( except we had 2 kids 18 months apart) and I am gradually growing out of it recently. I still have my ups and downs but, in whole, my husband is really really happy about my progress.

- a breakthrough was after I completed my Osteopathy treatments( being preggo and giving birth, nursing and carrying does change your body alignment which will effect the overall function of the body). I still had pains, discomfort but, it was easy to allocate and tackle.

- apart from the medical care, may I please ask you to just listen to her, when she says she's tired, tell her "why don't you go rest, I'll watch the kid". Instead of asking her to exercise, tell her that she must be tired. Please do tell her that she is doing a great job and thank you for taking care of our child. Please don't try to fix the problem by suggesting, we know it's a very caring and loving intention but, it's kind of pressuring.

- becoming a mother is a big transition, your body and life is never the same. I do understand the argument get on with it! but, for some people, it's really difficult.

- maybe a good idea if you change scenery, I felt more lively when I found a group of friends that had the same mind set, before then, I was kind of hiding myself to fit in. For SAHMs, it can get limited, the access to adult society and normal life.....

- give her a task within the house that is NOT interaction with the child. It could be "please decorate the nursery" or here is the budget, can we rearrange the living room?

I really think that you are becoming really frustrated with your situation but, please please hold on. We know it but, we're neck deep in just getting the day over that we just don't have the extra strength no matter how much we love you, to show it. Please also know, we hate ourselves for being like this.

My older one is turning 5 soon and I am getting the hang of dealing with this overwhelming feeling.

Hope this help!

I have (had) a long history over several decades of multiple illness "diagnoses" including chronic fatigue syndrome --all of which, when you dug into them, were of unknown or "idiopathic" origin. I'll spare you the long history and complicated explanations that finally emerged, because you really don't need them, but I would have died years ago if I hadn't figured it all out, and almost did die several times along the way. My problems were serious enough that at one point the doctors in the hospital told me I'd be dead in 24-48 hours, if things didn't improve. They did an operation on me once that had multiple risks of death ranging up to 40 percent each, but they said if they didn't do it, there was a 100 percent certainty I would die. But they were powerless to pinpoint causes or actually cure anything. I left the hospital against the arguments of three of them, and set out learning how to heal myself, which eventually I did.

What you do need to know, to help your wife, is where the CURE to MOST diseases lies, in the diet. Before you dismiss this, and sparing you another encyclopedia-long explanation, just TRY what I'll outline here for three months. Thank me later.

First, your wife must STOP eating all grain foods (except white rice), dairy products, and ALL factory-processed/maufactured foods. That means nearly every food that comes packaged in a can, jar, box or pre-printed wrapper/container. Eliminate every food that lists ingredients including additives or chemical names, even if the packages make health claims and say some of the ingredients are called "organic" or "natural". Do all your food shopping in the wet markets and/or the outer "fresh foods" section of the supermarkets. [There are a FEW minor exceptions to these rules, like fresh, raw nuts that may come in a bag/package, but basically follow this and you'll be safe.]

Basically, you need to emphasize foods that not only your great-grandmother would have recognized, but your ancestors from 30,000 years ago, before the agricultural age would also recognize. That means fresh, leafy greens (spinach and kale are excellent); vegetables (the more variety, the better); fruits (forget the nonsense about sugars; when you eat the whole fruit, it's fine); and nuts (NOT cashews or peanuts, but others like walnuts, almonds and pecans).

Eat these foods about 75% raw and 25% cooked. Two big salads and one meal of steamed veggies with rice is a good start. Eat as much as appetite dictates, but no more. Typical meals should be about the size of two fists held together, which approximates the size of the stomach. Chew the food well. Consider getting a Vita-Mix blender, to liquefy foods into smoothies.

Include some good natural fats like fresh coconut, avocado, and olives ( if you can't get fresh, rinse well to remove as much of the preservative salt as possible first). Use only coconut oil to cook in. A little bit of extra-virgin olive oil or fresh walnut oil or avocado oil or hemp oil is okay on a salad, but for cooking purposes, avoid other oils than (cold-pressed) coconut oil.

Add medicinal foods and spices to the diet, including beets, garlic, ginger, and turmeric (take with a little bit of black pepper). There are other good ones, but these are the best "must haves" to start with.

DO NOT CHEAT, NOT EVEN A LITTLE. I cannot over-emphasize this. When I started healing, even something as apparently innocuous as a splash of soya sauce or a piece of sushi made me ill, and undid all the effects of the diet for days. If your wife has a gluten issue (VERY common now with modern strains of genetically altered wheat!), even a few parts-per-million can set off negative consequences. AFTER the three months, she can start testing foods again, but not before.

Get enough rest. Sleep early - absolutely not later than 10 pm. Let the helper take care of the kid during the night, not the sick mother, until she is healed. Make the bedroom as dark and quiet as possible. Deep sleep is essential for true healing, which is why you never want to be in a hospital when you are really sick.

Drink FILTERED water only, not tap water, even if it is boiled. Do NOT drink bottled water from plastic containers. Get glass containers and refill them with your own filtered water, to drink when you are out of the house.

Add a filter to your shower, so you aren't showering with as-is tap water.

STOP using regular flouridated toothpastes. Go to an Indian Provisions store and buy an ayurvedic toothpaste like Vicco or Dabur Red. While you are there, also buy a bottle of sesame oil (Note: do NOT use the Chinese type in the supermarkets!) and start "oil pulling". Basically, each morning before eating anything you swish a tablespoon of the oil around your teeth and gums for 15-20 minutes. Then spit the oil out (do NOT swallow it - it will be full of harmful bacteria!). Rinse and brush with an acceptable toothpaste. If you have a tongue scraper, use it also.

Start deep, slow breathing. Breathe into the abdomen from the diaphragm, hold it a few seconds (do NOT strain!) and exhale at a comfortably slow pace. You can do this for 5 minutes, or 5 hours, whatever feels good. Do not chest-breathe or hyperventilate; it should feel good and make you feel cleaner, not dizzy.

Consider trying meditation and relaxation and visualization exercises. Without the dietary changes, these may not be effective, but in combination these can speed up healing, too.

This may seem like a lot, but start with the diet. That's the huge elephant in the room, so to speak. Then add as many of the other things as you can. There is more that can be done, but if you do nothing other than fix the diet, the rest may not matter much. Keep eating the processed, factory "foods" and it will be almost impossible to fully heal.

Good luck. If you need to know more, send me a message c/o this site and I'll do what I can to help you.

OH! A word about meats. Avoid them in the initial healing period. They can be added back in later, but not the processed kinds with preservatives, and not the meats from factory-raised animals fed grains and treated with antibiotics and hormones. Processed meats in plastic in the supermarket, unless otherwise labelled, usually have gluten in them, so avoid them like the plague for now. Avoid all meats with nitrates or nitrites in them --but you know that already, since you are avoiding all additives. Right?! (grin) When you do eventually want to eat them, look for organic, grass-fed or pastured meats. Organ meats and liver are actually excellent foods, but probably best saved for the post-healing, rebuilding phase.

Eggs, on the other hand, are excellent, but ONLY the organic, pasture-fed ones (sorry, they are much more expensive!), and then do not fry or scramble them. Raw is best (after a good washing of the shell!), but they can be boiled (preferably soft-boiled) or poached.

Okay, there is more, but this should be ample to get your wife into "healing mode". If she tries to tweak a little around the edges, it probably won't work. I wasted YEARS trying to heal with conventional wisdom and little tweaks, and only continued to suffer more and more. It takes a dramatic, full, no-cheating change to effect deep healing, but once you've experienced it, you'll never look at the world the same way again. Expect a miracle, because if you do all this as described, the difference (even if you are "normal" and not sick to begin with) will be darned near miraculous!
