There is mounting evidence that psilocybin can effectively treat depression.
Depression rates are shockingly high. The condition is estimated to affect 10-15% of the global adult population and has been ranked as the fourth highest contributor to the global disease burden by the World Health Organization.
To make matters worse, approximately 30% of people who suffer from major depression are classified as "treatment-resistant," meaning that they respond poorly to the different types of antidepressant medications currently available.
Put these facts together and you have a public health crisis. This has prompted many scientists to look for out of the box treatments for depression.
One treatment that has shown promise in recent studies is psilocybin, the active chemical compound in hallucinogenic mushrooms. A new study published in the journal Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica adds more credibility to the claim.
