can you give me advice how to prevent future attacks of gout? i just recovered from a gouty attack and it was a doosey. my last episode was a year or so ago. i did some research and got advice from chinese and westerners. both sides agree that i should keep well hydrated, stay away from booze, and load up on a b12(i think) vitamine. i drink about 1 liter of water daily and i keep my fridge well stocked with gatorade. i haven't stopped drinkin but i don't do it so often anymore. i take a multi vitamin everyday-i take about 2 or 3 times the recomended daily dose.

the chinese have told me not to eat "seafood". thats really not clear. there is a lot of food that comes from the sea. do they mean don't eat "shellfish"? they also said don't eat tofu or mushrooms. i really don't eat seafood or shellfish or tofu that often.

Gout is caused by the raised in the serum uric acid level and it can be aggravated by purine-rich diet. Here gives you a more structured list of foods which are purine rich.

Organ Meats:(Liver, Brain, Kidney, Sweetbread)

Fish:(Sardines, Anchovies, Herrings. Mackerel)

Shellfish:(e.g. Scallops)

Game Meats

Vegetables: (Asparagus, Dried beans and Peas, Mushrooms)

Gravy

If you already had very good water intake but still frequent acute attacks, then you may need to have a weight reduction or even need oral drug prophylaxis e.g. Allopurinol, stop intake of alcohol and wear comfortable shoes.
