Does anyone know of a good OB-GYN doctor in Hong Kong who is experienced with VBAC (vaginal birth after caesarean)? Thanks in advance!

They all are. It's very usual.

Oh, really? What are the statistics in HK of successful VBAC? In the USA they all say they do it as well, but you have to look very carefully at the actual success rate. I had a friend who went to a practice that claimed to support VBAC -- but AFTER her second C section she found out they had never had any successful VBACS in their history. Others have C-sec rates in the 70 - 90% range for VBACs. On the other hand, in many cases it really does seem to be easier on Mum to repeat the old surgery instead of getting stretched, stitched, and scarred in a new place. Have to look at the original reasons for the CSec as well as Mum's feelings about the matter. Always remember the primary goal is healthy baby and Mum!

Thanks you both for your input on my question. I'd be interested in hearing from people who have had successful VBACs in Hong Kong and find out who their OB-GYN was. Also, any info. on which clinic or practitioners in HK has good success rate with VBACs.
My doctor/midwife (not in HK) told me I would have no problem delivering my next child vaginally, but that it is critical that it is directed by a doctor who has good experience with them. Apparently, VBACs take more time/work on the doctors behalf and a whole team needs to be on site ready for a C-sec within 30 minutes - just in case there is a complication. I hear in the US, many just can't be bothered with that, don't know about here.
Having a second C-sec would probably be easier for me as well, in some ways.. but, I've read that with each C-sections there is an increased risk of problems with subsequent pregnancies. So, if the second one is c-sec... it could possibly effect fertility/full term pregnancy etc. would the 3rd. I am not pregnant with my second yet. But, I'm new to HK and thought I'd begin the research now. Thanks in advance everyone for your input!

Hi, elane, I am currently pregnant and is being looked after by Dr. Joe Chan. He did a laparoscopic ovarian surgery for me and I am pregnant shortly after the surgery. I expect to have normal delivery in February. Although I do not have previous c-section, I did hear from some of the other ladies in his clinic that they did have natural births after c-section by Dr Chan. So, I believe that he is the one that you are looking for. My impression is that he is very professional and caring. He did answer my questions with patience. His office is at Central and his no. is 25233328. Good luck.

Elane, I'm not pregnant with my second yet but I am also contemplating VBAC.... I keep changing my mind though. Although the risk of a rupture is minimal, if it happens, the consequences are serious. I was all for it last month until I read stories from women who have had ruptures... either they lost their babies or their babies had brain damage from lack of oxygen from the time of the rupture to their emergency c-section. They too were told that they were excellent candidates for a VBAC. But then it is true, a repeated c-section carries risks too. I saw two gynae... one told me that he wouldn't take the risk and would recommend a repeated c-section. The other said that I could have a trial of labour with the success rate being 50/50 simply because she would not let me labour too long in case of a rupture.... it depends on how you see this statement whether it is good to prolong or not......
This month, I'm leaning towards a repeated c-section.....
Oh well, this will always be a hard decision. Good luck.

Thank you Ann for your recommendation of Dr. Chan - I wil definately check him out. MayC, I appreciate your input above. You might have read this already, but check out this link on ivillage which scrutinizes the study (in 2000 I believe) which indicated c-section was the safer option. After reading this article, I'm leaning towards VBAC. I will continue to research this issue though. http://parenting.ivillage.com/pregnancy/plabor/0,,j9gw,00.html

I have 3 kids and the first one was by a C-section. The rest are all by vaginal delivery and my doctor has no difficulty at all with the 3 deliveries. She is Dr Margaret Cheung who used to work in Queen Mary.

I just noticed this which may have some helpful info in general:

The usual response of any O&G for a birth following an earlier C-section is to try a normal vaginal birth first.

I'm not sure I would go that far docboat. (If we exclude the USA where unfortunatly the litigation atmosphere has polluted the thinking)
Most Obs would offer the OPTION of trying a VBAC, unless there were repeating reasons for another C-S, previous pelvic fracture or abnormality for instance.

Welcome to HK jukew! If you are looking for a good private OB/gyn give Dr Choy a call at Care for Women (3112 0480). It's a personal choice but Dr Choy has received many recommendations and is very good.

Hi, Jukew, for myself, Dr. Joe Chan is not expensive at all for the time and skills. He is very patient and caring. The cost for a consultation is about $600-800. By the way, he is also not as commercial as those I saw before him.

Ann - Would you please share more what you mean by not as commercial as the others? Also, do you know where he received his training? Thanks.

Hi, elane, I know Dr Chan because I was introduced by somebody in this website for my ovarian cyst. He did a laparoscopic surgery for my ovarian cyst and I am now pregnant. As far as I know, he was previously trained in the Queen Mary Hospital in HK and he also spent a few year in the UK for some higher trainings. He was a senior doctor ?consultant before he started his private practice.
To me, I think he is not "commercial" because he is not those people always talk about money. There was no additional charges for detailed ultrasound. To my surprise, the reason he gave me for not doing packages is that, he wants to give the women the chance for switching in case the women do not like him during the course of pregnancy. This is certainly different from those who do packages. I believe that one of the aims of doing packages is to keep the pregnant woman with the doctor. The woman has to pay a lot (? 40000) and keep seeing the doctor even though she may not like the doctor later on.
I really hope that you can see Dr Chan and share your feeling with us. Anyway, good luck and take care.

I think most doctors would refund an element of the package price if you decide to change in the middle of your pregnancy or treatment - check beforehand. It is always your choice whether to keep seeing a particular doctor. I understood that packages passed a discount to the patient and sort of give an umbrella protection/more access to the doctor within the package. Some doctors don't want to give discounts in this way (or at all) or be as accessible and so don't offer packages. It's a free market - take your pick! To me it's more important you feel comfortable and trust your doctor and that is a personal choice.
