Have you got any feedback about this Dr Chu ? I read on this same website that he was a good dentist with AFFORDABLE prices (http://hongkong.asiaxpat.com/forums/medical-and-health/threads/94969/urgent-need-a-dentist-cheap-and-good-in-pain-management/ and http://hongkong.asiaxpat.com/forums/living-in-or-moving-to-hong-kong/threads/79528/root-canal-dentist-urgent-help/). I would need to do have a root canal treatment but not paying 10k HKD for this treatment whereas in France it would cost 1k HKD...

I used to have medical cover so went anywhere close for a dentist. However now I don't have cover and need 4 fillings and shopped around. After trying 3 I had been quoted from $1200 for a molar filling done in BoA Tower, Central. To $780 for the same in Kennedy Town. I was beginning to think it was going to cost me a fortune. However I thought I woudl give Dr. Joseph Chu a try as of this recommendation on Geo. I was seen the same day and he quoted $360 a filling, so snapped that up and had 4 done today for $1440 in total. He was very good and professional and I am very happy with the results and the price!
Dr. Joseph Chu; Tel: 25398649
100m from Sai Wan Ho MTR
46 Shau Kei Wan Road
(Be careful as there is another Dr Chu at 30-36 SKW Rd who is more expensive!

Thanks to this feed I went to visit Dr. Joseph Chu today. He is an incredibly good dentist and very honest. My old dentist has retired at the age of 84 or something like that and he told be I didn't need fillings and my teeth were in good condition. I then had to have my wisdon tooth out during a trip to the UK and the dentist said I needed loads of fillings. So of course I was rather embarrassed, put it down to maybe my Dentist not having the best eye sight and decided to look around for a new one once I returned to HK. After finding all of the recommendations on here, I went to see Dr. Chu. He said that I should go with my old dentists opinion as my teeth were fine and all I needed was one tiny filling. He was incredibly nice and his honesty was refreshing. Unlike the guy in the UK who was able to find a list as long as my arm, including a brace for my one tooth that is not straight. I definitely recommend Dr. Joseph Chu and thank you to everyone else who wrote about his excellent service.

Hi guys,
I went to see dr Chu numerous times this months. I have a painful tooth since I landed in HK.
This tooth has an important filling, and before leaving Australia the dentist told me that I would need a root canal and crown but that it could wait until I go back to France (September). I've never had any pain before the landing (pressure probably). Anyway, dr Chu told me that it was probably a referred pain from the healing of my wisdom teeth wounds. I therefore waited but since Saturday the pain is coming back. So I went to see him yesterday, he gave me some antibiotics and told me that it should heal but that long term I'll need a root canal (what I want to take care of back to France). Anyway I was a bit annoyed because he left me with the pain for 4 weeks (I saw him on 3rd of July and 4th of July because the pain was still here, and then came back yesterday because its not normal that a tooth hurts that way for so long, even after my wounds healed) and then decided to give me the antibiotics for 4 days which I'm not sure will work.
This is just my experience.

Hi,
Me again. I went to caritas clinic today, and the dentist (Angela Lee) couldn't find the problem, she sent me to a specialist. I decided to give a go at Bayley and Jackson. Got an appointment on the day (yay). Went there at 5.30 and and left at 6.30. The dentist took a long time to find what is the problem (Daniel Choy). Anyway, got an OGP X-ray + normal X-ray. On the OGP X-ray I could see the tooth that Chu redid the filling on. I could see 2 different colours, basically he left half of the silver filling at the bottom and filled the rest with the white filling !!! Unbelievable !!! True Chu is cheaper (now I know why) but he did a bad job. Anyway, I'm going to pay big bucks for the root canal with bj but it's worth it. I would nos recommend at all Chu. Very disappointed.

Sorry to hear about your bad experience. You mentioned about big bug, if you don't mind could you share how big the bug is? So you are going to have your root canal with a endodontist, a specialist dentist?
Would you mind sharing the details contact for Bayley and Jackson Associate?
It sounds like to me doing small trivial job with Joseph Chu is ok. However for elaborated work like root canal, dental implant, it's probably better to go with a specialist. Am I right?

For the root canal of my molar I'm going to pay max $7000. And I'm not having it done with a specialist, but with Daniel Choy at Bayley and Jackson in Central, Jardine house. You can find their number easily on the net.
Actually, small trivial job is NOT OK with Chu because he was not able to just REPLACE properly one of my old fillings and I'm going to have to replace it again. And now that i think about it, he didn't even take an X-ray before changing my filling. If I were you, I wouldn't go to Chu.

Someone i know went to Caritas on Caine Road in Mid Levels. The female dentist (not sure what her name was) did a bad job (pain for weeks) and the male orthodontist was sloppy and arrogant.

Curious if anyone has done a successful root canal therapy at Dr. Joseph Chu? How much it cost you and if any good/bad experience to share?
Thanks.

@zoltm I just did a root canal with him. It required 4 total visits, 3500 HKD, first visit took around an hour or less, each visit after was around 15-25 min. I did this over the space of one month.
No bad experiences for me, at least not so far. This was all finished about a week ago, if anything bad comes up I will update the thread.
Regarding the facilities, it’s just a small little shop, equipment looks to be older compared to the dentist I went to in Central. But then again, the price here is like ¼ of what you would pay in Central.
Joseph himself is pretty nice, although sometimes he does not say much, or ask if you need to spit, etc. Overall though I am satisfied, and my tooth works again without pain. I am going again next week to get a filling this time.
I think after the filling I will go to the more expensive place in Central again to have them check out his work and let me know if it looks fine, since I have no way of judging the quality myself, besides the fact that my tooth does not hurt and I can chew on it again. Will update after it is all said and done.

Thanks to this forum, I tried Dr. Joseph Chu. A crown came off
in the morning, so I went to his office in the early afternoon. It
was easy to find, and they worked me into the schedule. All worked
well, and very professional. He clearly explained the procedure of
restoring the tooth. He located a small cavity and filled that too.
Total cost $860, which I thought very reasonable. I would
definitely recommend him to my friends.

I can vouch from a very recent visit (Dec 2014) that Dr Joseph Chu (G/F, 30-36, SKW Road) is still living up to all the praise heaped upon him in these columns! He deserves all of it and more.
A very professional, honest, polite dentist who does exactly what is needed and no more! Won't charge for any extras, and keeps the costs to what is clearly stated in his price list at the reception table.
If you are looking for a very reasonably priced dentist in Hong Kong, your search ends here. Its worth travelling any distance for a doctor like him!
Highly recommended!

Dear All,
I've recently moved to HK and unfortunately already faced the necessity to deal with crown installment.
Based on recommendation for Dr. Chu placed in this forum I've visited him to get an initial consultation. Indeed his price for the crown turned out to be substantially cheaper than in Central. But I feel bit concerned about the overall appearance of the facilities, equipment and sanitary conditions. Does Dr. Chu properly
asepticize the tools? I don't want to undermine Dr. Chu just looking for your proven experience to be on a safe side.
Many thanks for any comments.

Hello All,
Based on information from this forum on Dr. Chu, I went to see him today to have a tooth extraction. I booked the appointment a few days ago and was able to get an appointment for Saturday afternoon.
The location was easy to find. I took the MTR and got off at the Sai Wan Ho MTR station. Take Exit B and follow the tram railway heading towards Tai Koo direction. The dental clinic store front is on the street level.
The walk
Dr. Joseph Chu graduated from HK University Dental School, per his degree certificate mounted on the wall.
He also does orthodontics and tooth implants.
For his 2015 price list posted at the reception desk, they are:
Teeth Cleaning - HK$400
Filling - HK$400
Tooth Extraction - HK$420
Surgical Extraction - HK$1400
Simple Extraction of wisdom tooth - HK$1400
Surgical Extraction of wisdom tooth = HK$3400
X Ray - HK$100
Root Canal - HK$4400
consultation - HK$100
The above items are a sample list for your reference so you have an idea about the dental cost. You can always call their office for more details on what service you need and they will quote you a price over the phone.
My tooth extraction took about 20 minutes and he explained the pros and cons of taking the tooth out. He gave me three shots and quickly pulled out the tooth without any pain. I was surprised at how efficient he was able to do this. Overall, I was happy with his service and will go back to see him for teeth cleaning and other services.

Thanks

No, but I was just quoted 3,500 for a crown at Dr. Chu's office. Everything quoted at Dr. Chu's is half the cost as Quality HC prices.

Well another positive experience to add. I went to see dr Chiu this morning - he fit me in very quickly as I only made appointment yesterday. Half of my tooth fell out on Saturday and i also needed a filling, which were both attended to there and then. Cost 840 for both. was only in there for about 20 minutes and also only had to wait to see him for about 15 min. Wish I had known about him before as I have put off going to dentist for ages due to cost - had a crown done somewhere in central and it cost around 10,000$hk!
