Excruciating pain, sometimes even a sheet touching it feels so uncomfortable. Redness, swelling. If you have reoccuring gout decrease intake of purines in food, drink lots of water. Also, might get your kidneys checked out as some kidney conditions can increase one's tendency toward gout.

Gout usually causes pain in the big toe, however this may also be the ankle or joint. The pain is usually ‘severe’ ie unable to walk or managing to limp, poor sleep etc. In other words, gout attacks are obvious.
Rarely do patients get renal stones because of gout. A simple bloodtest may confirm the diagnosis.
Treatment in the first instance is avoidance of food & alcohol that may induce the attacks and taking plentiful of water.

High uric acid is the cause I assume. Does this only come from the foods we eat? Other than medicine, is reducing foods high in purine & drinking lots of water the only way to avoid? Does anyone know any supplements to help lower uric acid?
