My dentist says it costs anything from $400 - over $1000 to replace the amalgam fillings. They have to remove all the original filling because you can't just stick extra "filling" on top of the old one. Then they put a new filling in.
They can also cover it with a cap. Perhaps that's all you'll need in your case.
If they are removing the filling and putting a new one in, it could take maybe one hour - depending on the size.

Hope it sorted itself but wanted to mention a little more. I looked into having my old mercury fillings removed and replaced a couple of years ago (In Australia) The dentist that I went to (specializing in this procedure) gave me so much literature to read regarding the leaching process of the mercury in removal. I never went ahead as I moved back to HK but just keep it in mind if you are feeling lethargic or not quite yourself in the future you may want to make sure that no infiltration has occured.

Did the literature you were given by your australian dentists point to serious problems? The info I find is frankly inconclusive.

I had all of my amalgam fillings replaced in Kuala Lumpur by an excellent dentist for a third of what it would have cost me in Australia. Before that I had terrible trouble with my teeth and gums. My teeth were sensitive all of the time. I thought it was all related to prior cases of gingivitis (caused by severe anemia). But when I had the amalgam fillings replaced with ceramic...almost all of the tooth sensitivity went away. Headaches went away. The terrible metal taste in my mouth went away.
I definitely recommend getting rid of any mercury based fillings, no matter what the literature says.

You can ask for a "dental dam" which is a piece of rubber they place over your mouth so nothing goes does your throat or anywhere in your mouth, it isolates the tooth for safe removal. After you can do a heavy metal detox and cleanse to removal any built up toxins. http://healthyhumanshk.com/detox/135-the-life-tree-heavy-metal-detox-liver-and-kidney-cleanse-60ml-.html
