My partner grinds her teeth while sleeping; to the extent that’s its giving me sleep anxiety. Its a really disturbing noise, that not only leads me to the spare room but must also be doing damage to her teeth, jawbone and may possibly leading to other health issues too. We have tried a mouth guard before, however she then found it impossible to sleep, and that won’t cure the problem anyway.
I was wondering if hypnosis or a sleep therapist could help, as this issue is clearly an involuntary reaction to something, so we need to dig ddper. Can someone make a recommendation here; perhaps even acupuncture could make a difference?

I'm a teeth clencher, but used to also teeth grind and both are closely related. I am a what you would call a "highly strung" person. I get very stressed very easily and I find I clench during the day and most definitely at night. When I wake in the morning I have a sore jaw, earache and of course headache.
I did TMJ massage and it's great for a short term solution, but as you said, you may need to dig deeper to find the route of the problem. If your partner is a stressy person, then she needs to do relaxation, etc., to manage the condition. Mine is quite sever and I suffer migraines, earache, toothache, neck pain.
A good way to help during the day is to tell her to be consciously aware of tension and stop and concentrate on relaxing her jaw.
I found osteo/chiro and massage on a regular basis the best for me. Good Luck

matto,
I grind my teeth alot to at night (my siblings do too). I have been wearing a night time mouth guard fitted for me, by my dentist. It does take awhile to get used to wearing. And after so many years of wearing it, if I put it on even 5 minutes to early, I find it makes me gag. But sleeping, no problem. has she had one made specifically for her by the dentisxt, or just a generic store bought one?
IF, I am soo tired and forget to put it in 1 night, my husband wakes me up to put it in, cause he too, says the grinding is so annoying

matto, teeth grinding can have some serious affects involving the teeth, TMJ and muscles around the neck. she is lucky that you have been able to catch this problem early as can lead to variety of problems very worn teeth (which could lead to tooth loss, sensitivity, gum disease etc), headaches, neck and back pain and joint problems.
the causes of involuntary teeth grinding are not known however, there is a high correlation with stress and teeth grinding.
i think that you must consult both a dentist and a therapist to help her overcome this problem. the dentist will prescribe a type of mouthguard which will protect the teeth, and joints and provide relief to any symptoms she has been having. furthermore, destressing is also key to the treatment in order to overcome this problem.

Address the cause first.
Try relaxation techniques prior to sleep. Read, don't watch TV. If necessary, get some anti-anxiety meds for the short term. The TMJ massage is good if you can get someone who knows how to do it properly. I had it on the inside of the mouth - worked like a charm.
Without sounging like a class-A poef, try using lavendar oil in the room before sleeping, it'll relax you and make you sleep more soundly.
