Hello,

Someone advised me one dentists cabinet in Central.

I had a first visit and a quote for next one: 15,000HK$ for one crown!

It is crazy price.

Do you know some good and cheaper dentists?

I have seen Novodontics clinics. Are they good one and cheaper than the one I have seen?

Thanks

If the HK market is expensive, consider a trip to mainland. I don't know prices in Shenzhen. But I have had gold crowns, with porcelain cover, in both Zhengzhou and Shanghai in the last 18 months. About 1000-1200 rmb for the crown.

I was quoted 10 000 for an implant recently, and only 5000 for a partial denture (two crowns and a connecting bridge denture).

All this was in the relevant VIP centres of the hospitals. Same standards as UK dentists.

I would not recommend any dental work in the mainland. It is cheaper initially, but you must also consider the cost of replacing the crown or the tooth. A good quality crown can a decade if you put in the effort to maintain it properly. Bare in mind, nothing lasts forever.

I would recommend you to go to Bayley and Jackson's clinics in Central. They will not be the cheapest around town, but you will get good quality treatment. Dr. Daniel Choy is very good and would be my recommendation.

Their telephone numbers are 25261061 / 25247116

Dear Ed and Notaeuropean,

I don't want to argue because I don't know what Notaeuropean has said.

But what I can ensure you if that the price the dentist asked me is un-acceptable.

I will not give the name of this dentist, but it is a well-known one in HK. And I am sure he/she is very good.

But he/she tried to find a lot of things to repair / do on my teeth - push me for whitening. And promise that the work done will last 10 years.

But the total quote was 125,000 HK$ for 5 crown + 3 inlay + whitening.

Will you pay such amount for your teeth ????

No probably no.

It's quite difficult to find doctors, specialist, nurses in HK speaking a good English. But it's not a reason for these people to ask expatriate so many money.

Expatriates are not a piggy bank.

What's why I hope someone will advise me a dentist, speaking english, which can make crown for 6500 hk$ max (it's the price in my EUROPEAN country).

Whoever was banned definitely posted comments laced with the F word ... I seldom ban anyone on here and only if there is a major rule violation so I quite clearly recall the profanity...

I agree with kiwimum, I've been to both Sandeep Jain and Mike Smith, they are both excellent dentists, put you at your ease, and fairly priced.

Can't help but comment here. I am undergoing some initial pre-implant consults and altho I think myself a pretty calm person, I could not help but get sooo frustrated at these "recommended" or self-promoting dentists. I wish, Ed, that there was some way to ban ppl affliliated with these dentists who promote themselves or their colleague. I had to pull out my loose tooth, get an earful of the sad state of my boneless gum, and a temporary "denture" ( a very sloppy one may I add) and the total price tag was a whopping (in my opinion) Hk$9000!!!! Why would they charge this and why does it seem like expats always get ripped off???

To gz Dentist:

What is the difference between a "good" crown and a "best" crown? Can you be more specific?

Where were you trained?

i dont think anyone would charge HDK 6,500 for a crown. A crown does involve a lot of preparation plus laboratory work and materials. The cheapest would be a little less than 10k.

Those local dentists who speaks no or bad english may charge that price. Try mongkok or shamshuipo

Do you really think that your crown is made in Hong-Kong and not China?

In China, the price for a crown ex-factory is less than 500HK$.

I went on holidays in France last month and got a quote from my dentist in France for the same thing:

France: 6,750 hk$ / Hong-Kong: 15,000hk$

Nothing to add.

reply to Jele:

I think the fees are related to the cost of living and rent in that particular city. Hong Kong's commerical rent is one of the highest in the world, may be this is one of the reasons why the fee is higher than most parts of the world. I think HK fees are comparable to New York, San Francisco, Tokyo, London and Paris.

Of course in HK, different discrict has different fees for the same service because of rental costs. Central being the highest and other discricts are cheaper, e.g. Mongkok, Shamshuipo, Chai Wan, etc.
