It is a great system. Nobody can say what it helps, but breathing is at the heart of all we do so good breathing is bound to be beneficial. Bad breathing is common and due to habit and stress. Asthma definitely benefits from working with Buteyko method..

Thx aussie1 for your feedback. Have you or anyone you know learned and practiced the method? I'm keen to hear the experiences of people who have tried the method and to hear about the outcome, whether beneficial or not. Anyone?

I am interested in this but have not actually met someone who has used the method - other than the guy selling it. I found his discussion a bit too pushy and felt like I was going to have to buy a time share at the end of the talk.

Are there any people out there who have taken the course - successfully or not - who would be happy to give me some feedback? Send me a PM if you don't want to post on the thread.

That's very funny. I had a similar experience and my comments would be far less charitable and possibly unprintable.

I am lost mate, if we don't breath we are dead and good breathing is vitally important. The list of benefits is endless. As to Buteyko, coming from someone who had done different forms of breathing techniques for over 30 years, I really don't know. Because the literature is rather nebulous and trying to find out more from our time share salesman wasn't easy, especially when he found out I had no intentions of buying. He became more arrogant and defensive. Or rather, more so.

I suspect it is no better or worse than many techniques invented/developed over the centuries. There are only a few major principles involved in any case, it really depends on which area of health or sports in which you are interested. Horses for courses.

The clinical evidence for Buteyko collected is far less in volume than trials and evidence on various qigong and yoga breathing systems, though many qiqong and yoga type breathing systems are not intended to alleviate symptoms of asthma, which I understand from their literature and websites, is the primary purpose of Buteyko system.

Qigong can certainly help too but most HK teachers tend not to have great understndings on the products they are peddling. I noticed a Chinese system published books and dvds on 10 breathing forms a few years back. As a bit of a geek in this field and knowing that there were only 2 forms in this system, (I have almost all major publications from the Bejin Qiqong Institue since 1982, mostly in boxes in my ex's house in London) I sought out the official government sanctioned head of the system in China and asked about these previously unknow forms. His reply was asking if I liked the "new forms" and that they are planning to launch more "new" products soon, though the claims were that these were previously unknown techniques. They were "previously unknown" because they hadn't been invented yet! What more can I say.

I have no inclination myself to spend large sums of money to find out that Buteyko is just another run-of-the-mills system disguised in gobblediggok and supported by psuedo-science. I suspect it is not and there are genuine benefits. I also suspect that I have developed a prejudice against the product because I didn't like the salesman. Perhaps it is my loss, but "time shares" mate, I am still PML.

Having taught Buteyko's method for the past 17 years - to literally thousands of people - from rather healthy ones through to the very ill - it is clear that, if applied diligently and with appropriate management, it consistently works to reverse a wide range of health issues. It is quite challenging to "sell" the idea that breathing could be so influential, but we do it around 25,000 times a day, and our modern lifestyle increasingly encourages us to chronically over-breathe - which certainly compromises the body. I work under the auspices of a doctors' clinic in HK and my work is guaranteed.... (I am based in Manila/HK)
