Hi,

Our 6 y.o. has her first appointment with the School Dental Care Clinic in Argyle Street this week.

Does anyone have any experience of the SDC with their child? We want to make sure that her first visit to the dentists doesn't put her off for life!

Thanks.

Went to the School Dental Care Clinic in Wanchai 2 weeks ago with my 6 y.o. boy.

It was the first time that my boy had his dental checkup and he was a bit nervous to start with.

The whole setup is quite cartoon like and is not scary at all. There are many little waist high open cubicles with miniature dental chairs. Parents can sit or stand outside the little cubicles, stick their heads in and talk to the dental therapists, kids can see their parents while theyare lying on the dental chairs.

The dental therapist was so good, I was totally impressed. She explained to my boy very thoroughly and clearly what she was going to do before she examined his teeth. My boy is English-speaking and there is no problems in communications. She even let him touched her drill with his fingers, he had a feel and it did not hurt his fingers at all. He was much more relaxed, watched a video about brushing teeth properly and practiced the techniques there with his own toothbrush under the supervision of the dental therapist.

My boy had 2 fillings done on the day with no problems, the whole appointment only took 45 minutes. Will go back next Monday have the teeth cleansed as he has plagues on his teeth.

I work in a medical practice with dentists working across the corridor from my room. I think that the school dental clinic setup is far better for kids (more kids friendly and much less expensive) than a dental clinic. I wish that there was such a clinic when I was a child, I screamed my head off during my first dental appointment. I was worried that my boy would do the same before the visit.

It's only $20 per year and it is money well spent.
