I am very concerned about the hygiene of the thermoscans used in hospitals. Went to a hospital in Happy Valley for a check up, a lady took my temperature and then left a lump of disgusting brown wax in my ear. This is certainly not mine as my ears were cleaned before going into the hosiptal and my wax are definitely not brown.
Can anyone tell me if this is a normal in Hong Kong hospitals?

they should be having a "plastic" protective cover on the part being inserted to your ear. And usual practice involves changing this plastic cover for each patient it is used on

Surprised to hear that, when my son stayed at Canossa, the plastic cover was re-used on him only, it was put in a box with his room number on it.

I will need to go back for several more visits. Can anyone advise me on how to handle this when the lady comes trotting along with her thermoscan... I don't want to be rude.

Just ask her if the plastic cover is a new one as you've had problems before. I doubt she'll be offended. If you're really worried, buy a set of plastic covers yourself from Watsons and bring it to the visit. I've brought my own medical supplies for my son when he stayed at Canossa and I've never had a problem nor given any dirty looks.

although it's DISGUSTING (I would have freaked) my friend who is an RN with the US army assured me that no disease can be passed to you via earwax. If that is at all reassuring.
I've never seen that happen before - maybe it is a one off mistake - not going to happen again. (mistakes are very common in hospitals) Take your own spare in case you are worried. Have to say that is the best guarantee.

At the time, I was confused and kept reassurring myself that they're clean and ear wax is not brown. But I really freaked out when I told my friend and she said "mine's brown", got home and washed my ear out so many times that it went bright red. Will definitely bring my own next teim. Thanks everybody!
