My husband has hemorrhoids (he thinks) and is not willing to go to the doctor. He is late 30s and has never had this problem before. Does anyone know some ways to treat it or over the counter medication that is effective? What has caused it?

Hi 24,
if it is haemorroids, it can sometimes be due to being a hint overweight, getting constipated & then straining, & lack of fibre in the diet.
you can get from chemists a product called PreparationH, which is a cream & pessary combo.
Its in a bright yellow box & guess it is available somewhere like Watsons.
Pregnant gals are prone to them , so it is a very common problem.
Once he has got shot of them, I'd suggest also taking Psyllium husks daily...can get them at health food shops ,or Metamucil (dearer than psylliums) this adds fibre to the diet, & therefore no more toilet dramas!
Poor guy, he is probably a bit spooked by it!
Good luck

I get them. Also don't want to go to a dr. Try google and you will find some good info.
If they are not too bad, the best thing to avoid them being a problem is lots of water & make sure there is enough fibre in the diet. You need to avoid constipation and also diarrhea.
Mine have always gone away if I eat well/drink enough water. They always come back if I have been travelling and/or not looking after myself and I get badly constipated and force.
My mum told me there are pessaries which help get them under control.
But if they are not subsiding and there is too much blood loss, he really must get them checked and treated, the procedures to fix them sound minor, they can laser them or twist them off. They are basically a varicose vein near the opening and can start bleeding.

Just remember all that bleed or hurt down under may not be harmorrhoid.
Things like xyloproct suppository and ointment can help a lot.

People who like to "read" on the toilet are more likely to get piles - the stretching of that area puts additional pressure - so keep regular, lots of fiber (two kiwis a day help keep the piles away) and don't read War and Peace while on the can.

It was however said that only human and dogs get haemorrhoid. So afterall it may not be posture or straining that gives you piles.

I think I am facing the same thing. I also had some bleeding for the first time today. Presuming it is the same cause I have varicose veins and have delivered 3 months back. But strangely ulcers are appearing and disappearing on my legs. Could someone advice me too!!!!
