Hello,

Do you know a good dermatologist that is good for mole removals ?

Has anyone heard of Dr Adrian Fung (in Causeway Bay near Sogo) ?

Thanks

Personally I wouldn't use an HK dermatologist to remove a mole. Because a deep incision is required, the few I have had removed were done by a plastic surgeon.

A mole is situated in the epidermis and the dermis of the skin, and doesn't reach the fat layer. So excision doesn't really have to be that deep. Just take a piece of pork and you'll know that the cut doesn't have to be deep before you reach the fat layer. And also, who do you think only a plastic surgeon can cut down to the have layer and other surgeons or dermatologists can't?

It also depends on the mole to be removed.

You can it excised by shaving where just the mole is sliced or cut. If the mole is flat or has deeper roots in the skin, there may be an indentation and healing may take several weeks.

With a full excision, the mole and adjacent skin are removed with a portion of the underlying subcutaneous tissue. The skin edges are then stitched. This will leave a small scar but the surgeon would try to make this as small as possible.

Finally, total destruction with lectrocautery, laser, or freezing with liquid nitrogen. There may be an indentation afterwards. If you want the mole to be checked, you should note that destruction won't leave a specimen to send off to the path lab.

My suggestion of using a plastic surgeon is based on my personal experience, having had a removal with a HK derm and a couple with a plastic surgeon. For me, the results did not compare.

If you want to have a mole check and see if it has any suspicious features requiring removal for medical reason, go to a dermatologist, who is trained to recognise melanoma.

Mole removal because of medical reason always need to be excised so that one can get a specimen for microscopic examination. Mole removal for cosmetic reason should be done by slicing, excision or laser, so there's no place for cautery or liquid nitrogen freezing.

The reason why plastic surgeons are more expensive is not because they cut small moles better, but because they are trained in doing more major reconstructive surgery. Of course if cost is not a concern, yeah I'd agree going to a plastic surgeon, even for some small surgery like simple mole excision.

My son has a birthmark which has become a mole. His pediatrician referred us to see Dr. Louis Shih who is a dermatologist. Dr. Shih suggested that due to the condition of the mole (getting bigger as the child grows, retaining its dark colour, and has hair growth on it), we need to have it removed before he turns 12. Because of the size, we needed to get it done over two visits. I find Dr. Shih to be very patient and takes lots of time to explain why he is recommending a certain treatment. He makes sure you understand the pros and cons before making the decision. Highly recommended. You can call Dr. Shih at 2810-7888. His office is in Central.

- Moles -

Just visit Dr. Lau Hang Kowok at Medicskin Centre in Central for a regular check up after I had removed 4 abdomen moles 2 years ago (in Europe)

Absolutely do not recommend him and found him to be unacceptable.

Not sure if its because the "consultation" was on a Saturday afternoon but he was not switched on. He asked me what Moles do I think where abnormal!? With a quick look at my upper front body he said that everything looks fine. I had encourage him to take a second look at my back, since its an area I cant check by myself. It was pretty obvious that Moles is not his expertise at all.

In summary I have to go to a different Dermatologist to get a proper examination and professional consultation.

Waste of time and consultation fee..

You don't need concerned to any dermatologist, the mole problem vanishes by itself.

Dr Kenneth Hui 25237690 if you need a mole removed in the face. He is excellent. Not cheap but worth it. I understand he used to operate (plastic surgery) wounded soldiers in the first Gulf War and did a very good job.
