I am an American expat based in Singapore.
Currently, I am not pregnant, however, looking to move to Taipei and may start a family while my husband and I are based there for work.
Let's assume we do not qualify for the National Health Insurance coverage and need to pay 100% expenses out of pocket with no insurance. I would like to know basic costs to have a child in Taipei - even if its on the very HIGH end at the best, private hospitals with English speaking staff. Also, average costs for a OB GYN visit, check ups, pre and post natal care, etc.
I have read many forums that are extremely outdated. Costs averaged about USD $3,000, but that was dated in 2007.
Also - since both my husband and I are US citizens with US passports, want to confirm that our child would be US citizens if we give birth in Taipei. A colleague mentioned to double check as if I have a son, they might have to enlist in National Service when he turns 18, though, we do not plan to live in Taiwan for more than 2 years.
Would appreciate any and all help.

Updating string RE: Immigration status. As we're both US citizens, the child will be a US citizen. Sorry folks, that was an easy answer in black and white via the American Institute in Taiwan: http://acs.ait.org.tw/report-birth-abroad.html
I am still in need of costs, if you could help me with that. I have only found 2 cost figures on the net of giving birth, a bit surprised I can't find more - and they are severely outdated.
And to clarify regarding the $3k USD figure - that was based on the birthing cost, only. No pre or post natal care.
Appreciate your help!
