Osteoporosis - no cure?

I believe there is no cure for osteoporosis, however, is there any way of delaying or halting its debilitating effects, for example, with particular medication, diet and exercise: can anyone recommend any course of action? Also, is Evening Primrose Oil of any use in countering the effects? My doctor says it isn't but articles I have found using the internet suggests it is helpful, containing Omega 6.

There are two drugs called Fosamax and Actonel which prevent your body shedding bone, which it does for everybody. The problem with osteoporosis is that your body sheds bone cells but doesn't create new ones. So if you take one of these drugs plus Calcium and Vitamin D, and do weight-bearing exercise, you should lay down new bone and this should show up in your bone densiometry test. But these drugs have their controversies, especially Fosamax. There are side effects which you can easily read about on the internet. You have to weigh up what is important to you. Taking a stronger tablet once a week insted of every day alleviates some of the side-effects. But, if you're like me, it is really a difficult and maybe losing battle fighting your genetics. I take truckloads of vitamins. I doubt if they make any difference to your bones except for the ones mentioned above and magnesium. So a multi-vitamin plus Ca, Mg and Vit D is probably all you need. I'm no professional though!

A good place for information is the National Osteoporosis Society (UK). It has lots of information sheets, covering food, exercise, supplements and drugs, etc., which will probably answer many of your questions. Scroll to the bottom of the page for the free sheets.

Diet and nutritional status most certainly impact bone health. Beyond calcium, other factors such as protein, phosphorus, sodium and bicarbonate intake all can have an impact on bone health. A dietitian can help you in assessing your current nutritional status and how to improve bone health through diet. I am a registered dietitian working in Shanghai and Hong Kong, traveling to Taipei periodically.

To combat osteoporosis, hormonic treatment plus hyper-gravity stimulation training should bring the optimal result. Hyper-gravity stimulation training is another form of weight-bearing exercise. This form of exercise is also referred as Controlled Whole Body Vibration Training.

Generally we have no problem with someone promoting themselves in response to a relevant question so long as they indicate that they represent the company they are promoting...

We do have a problem if someone recommends their company but does not indicate they work for them because that is misleading...

Whereas I've always drunk regular cow's milk on a regular basis, I'm following doctor's orders and drinking calcium-enriched milk daily instead, which makes me want to vomit every time I drink it. Is there an effective alternative way to boost calciul intake?
