I am wondeing if anyone here has been treated for sciatica (leg pain). I've been to see a physiotherapist (didn't seem to help with those pads and gentle massage) and a chinese doctor. The chinese doctor treated me with herbs (for wet-hot symptoms), plus also re-aligned my bones and massaged my muscles, and finally gave me acupuncture. I actually feel much better after seeing the chinese doctor; however, my problem still is in the very annoying leg pain, especially in the morning. I'm doing stretching and strengthening too, plus got a firm bed. Has anyone had the same problem? I feel my problem is growing worse for some reason...

Sciatia is related to trapped nerve- ever done acupuncture?
Please support our advertisers:
Yes, three times to be exact, but the pain still persists. I'm just wondering if there is anyone out there that has had it. And what treatment they found most helpful. I feel it even when I cough.

Hi keetohk,
A friend with sciatia used nutrition supplements and got it cured in 2 months. It's a true case.
If you would like to know more about it, drop me a email.

Hi Xinyidai, Thanks for the message. I'm not sure how nutrition supplements can help, but I guess nothing is out of the question. Can you let me know what the supplements are? But just to update, i am still seeing the acupuncturist, who says my 'wet-hot' symptoms have dissipated with the Chinese medicine he's given me over the past few weeks. And this time, the needles went into different locations than my first initial treatments. I will see how it goes.

keetohk,
i too have just got sciatica and am looking at remedies so would be interested to know how the acupunture goes. i'm going to start it this weekend. it's interesting to hear the physio didn't work as i was thinking of trying that.
i've been told that yoga helps a great deal (once it's not too painful) and will prevent further cases.

Hi Elisabeth,
Actually, I am beginning to think that it's a combination of different things that will help, and depending on the person and the severity. I spoke to a dancer friend who had it, and he says that for him, it was a combination of physiotherapy and yoga that helped. Just one day, it just disappeared!
I should mention that I have had lower back pain for over a year before it coming to this. When I had the lower pain, I was getting physiotherapy treatments, but it didn't seem to help with the problem back then either.

My father-in-law had a severe case; numb-legs & feet, like two lead weights, he said. He tried cortisone shot therapy, didn't work. He just had back surgery yesterday, a laminectomy (sp?). The surgery basically frees the pinched nerve in the vertebraeThat along with intensive physical therapy should get him right on track. It's a fairly common procedure now (in the U.S.). Hope this info helps!

Thanks for all the comments.
To Dani R, the idea of surgury is postively frightening; I hope that I do my problem does not get to that point, but good to know that the surgical method is an option.
To TC, it must have become a routine for you now to simply exist with the pain. But have you tried any sort of treatment? I mean....28 years! a long time to live with pain, or as you say, an inconvenience.
Yesterday, I went to see a massage specialist, who has seen many cases of this in his clinic. Two persons worked on me, and almost instantly, knew where my back was tight and sore which hits the sciatic nerve going down to my hip, thigh and calve. So there they go starting at my neck and then down to my back muscles that are pinching my nerve. Painful but soothing!
Today, I felt good enough to start doing some light cardio and some stretching, yoga/pilates exercises. I feel so good after doing them. The pain was much less than previously.
I am hoping that the massage treatment, and a dose of the exercises will send me on my way to a normal healthly back and leg. Let's hope so....

keetohk> Back surgery is always the last resort for sciatica when other methods have all failed. My mum has had the surgery done twice and I wouldn't say it's a complete success. In general, its better to seek complementary medicine first, acupuncture and massages are good- but in theory you should seek help from registered osteopaths who are prehaps the best people to diagnose and give you a massage

Hi Rotund,
Well, after a couple of days, the massage I got as mentioned before was only temporary. I think I might have to go the orthopaedic route as doggyladdy mentioned. Now what is an osteopath? I better look that one up too! Currently, I am seeing a chiropractor.

Hi Portia, just to let you know, i have been doing light stretches, pilates (core strengthening) every day now. My previous weight training has been substituted with this now. I am very pleased to hear that someone has succeeded using this approach. I'm still seeing the chiropractor, who has helped loosen up my lower back (which was so stiff and painful before the sciatica set in). I guess what I'm saying is that with the combination of the above, I'm recovering. By the way, I'm in my early 40's; how old is your husband if you don't mind me asking.

Thanks Portia for the information; it is very helpful and encouraging.
