Does this make sense? Re: Doctor Tsang Pak Ho

My wife, who is 27 and in excellent health, was complaining about heartburn and bloating and went to see Doctor Tsang Pak Ho.

He did no tests and immediately scheduled a colonoscopy and endoscopy for her.

Coming from a country where medical treatment is free, we did not second guess Dr Ho and went ahead with the procedures.

What he found was she had a helico bacteria, quite a common affliction in Asia. She was given a two week treatment of antibiotics.

While in his office getting the results, Dr Ho suggested that I do a test for the same bacteria.

The test involved blowing into a bag, then taking a tablet, and then blowing in another bag.

The test came up negative.

What I am wondering is why would the doctor not first have done this test on my wife.

Why would he have immediately prescribed an invasive procedure?

Might there be a reason for this?

Perhaps family history of bowel or stomach cancer. There is a strong hereditary factor, and even young people with relatives who suffered from digestive cancer are screened annually. Incidentally higher incidence of campylobacter in cancer sufferers. Having symptoms of bloating and indigestion should be investigated. If a relative of mine had a doctor like yours, he would still be alive today. Unfortunately, his doctor - an Australian btw- preferred less invasive techniques, and incidentally was diagnosed with campylobacter while the colon cancer was left unchecked.

Her family has no history of such cancer. She is an extremely healthy person who does intensive aerobics 4 - 5x per week. She has a very healthy diet seldom eating red meat, heavy on vegetables.

By the way, she has been back to another doctor here in HK for a recurrence of the symptoms and what he did was give her a 'blow in the bag test' and a blood test. He said that the first course of action for this is not colon/endoscopy.

First course of action should be the h.pylori breath test (blow in the bag test) - definitely NOT an endoscopy / colonoscopy.
