Lower back pain and soreness in right arm

ORIGINAL POST

I have had constant lower back pain and a soreness in the whole of my lower right arm and wrist ever since my baby arrived 11 months ago. It probably started with overuse of the computer and was aggravated by nursing for about seven months, using the computer while nursing (!) and also carrying growing baby around all the time. Any advice on whether I should see a chiropractor or a TCM doctor for bone-setting (as talked about in some threads here). Any advice will be appreciated!

It's likely that something you are CONTINUING to do NOW is still straining the muscles of your back, neck and shoulder. In addition, the muscles are probably already weak (and stretched from pregnancy) and so not holding those bones together as tightly or effortlessly as they once did! There are lots of nerves that go through those areas, and so imbalance in the muscles that stabilize your trunk can also set off nerve pain going down arms and legs! I'd suggest as a first line of defense that you examine what you are doing now and make sure your posture is perfect, and that you stop whatever you may be doing is that is causing the strain (e.g. change your nursing position, change method for carrying baby, sit up straight at computer with good ergonomics, use some trial and error to figure this out). But second and equally important, begin a gentle and daily exercise routine that will strengthen all your trunk muscles (front and back) as well as shoulders and neck. You can spend a lot of money on doctors and physio, but the bottom line is that good muscle tone of everything that keeps your body upright and straight will keep your body in balance as well as allow your body to heal itself. Strengthening the muscles in your shoulders and neck will enable those smaller, weaker muscles to withstand the stress of your daily computer and baby routine. Exercise will also lead to improved health that will give you more stamina to keep up with your busy life and your little one! (Just wait until she is three y/o!) Now my concern is also to go apply this advice to myself!

Hi Meiguoren, I think you are absolutely right. I have stopped nursing but of course all the other bad habits like slouching at the computer and carrying baby mainly on my right hip are continuing. Also, baby loves being walked around so I am often bent over him to support him under his arms. Since I stopped nursing the pain lessened, but it didn't go away.

I do quite a bit of exercise now (have always been quite active)-- yoga, cycling and weights at the gym, walking. Perhaps the missing ingredient is the strengthening portion. I've always neglected stomach exercises so will try to work on those. I will also continue with my regular accupressure massages which are also great stress relievers! Thanks so much for your sound advice!

I would highly recommend my Chiropractor who is Dr. Paul Fong. I see him regularly for lower back pain and neck pain. My friend's kids also see him regularly for scoliosis. Check out his website www.vitalhealth.hk.
