Bunion Surgery: Well I note that Mr. H's email is 654 days old. I don't know if you are even still in HK. I've been here approaching 1 year, all of which time I walk (1st time in my life I've ever done so much in my life having always driven)... and now I seem to have developed a bunion problem.

My question is was your wife's surgery successful? and if so, who was the doctor?

Many thanks, PMD

Yes, it would be interesting to hear from people who've had bunion surgery.

From what I've heard it's:

- very painful

- long recovery

- bunions will come back eventually.

People who develop bunions are predisposed to developing them - otherwise ALL women who wore high heels would get them. Of course, that's not the case. So the structure of your foot, or the way you walk, makes you predisposed to them. So you need to think... is it worth all that pain and money and recovery time when later in the life, the bunions will come back to haunt you!

I suppose if you suffer from painful feet right now, then maybe surgery might help ease the pain...?

You could also consider shoe inserts because some people have bunions because their feet pronate - in other words, their ankles go inwards. If you have a shoe insert, it will ease this, and the pressure on your bunions.

People with weak gluteal muscles will also walk in a certain way that puts pressure on bunions...

Our poor feet suffer when the rest of our posture is not 100% perfect!

The surgical result depends on which kind of surgery you take. Currently, most of the bunion surgery is bone-breaking surgery (i.e. cut the first metatarsal and move it to the straight position and fixed by screw). There is non-bone-breaking surgery which is focusing on the soft tissue and is less traumatic.

By the way, choice of surgery should consider the limitation after the surgery, recovery period and the possible complication.

What I know is the results of the surgery depends, but advancements in technology now has made it almost possible to start walking within 1 month. I know many orthopedic doctors in Singapore who are able to do that, but not too sure about HK though.

I have also purchased from www.bunioncare.asia recently. They provide suitable products for post op care and for those who want to prevent surgeries. Interesting products that are easy to use. They cannot cure the bunion, but definitely gives me some relieve.
