Wearing Contact Lenses

I have really bad eye sight and have worn contacts for nearly 15 years and I can say they are a lot more comfortable than wearing glasses. I use to play a lot of sports and now jog frequently and would find it inconvenient if wearing glasses. Also sweating in the HK heat with glasses is not nice.

It might take a couple of days, but you won't feel anything and on the odd occasion, I have forgotten I was wearing them.

After wearing various types of contacts, I now wear soft daily contacts which you don't need to clean but just throw away every night. You can buy 3/6/12 months supply at one time.

I did use the monthly ones for a while but I still had to buy cleaning solutions for them and on various occasions caught infections as the contacts didn't clean properly.

No, you cannot sleep with them in.

Hope this helps.

I started wearing contact lenses about 18 months ago and have never looked back again. I also wear daily disposable lenses (the ones with added moisture) and found them very comfortable. It took me only a day or two to get used to them.

Hi Shane,

I'm a Registered Optometrist (Part1) in HK. The most important question I ask my 1st time contact lens patients is how often you are planning on wearing them. Less than 3 times a week, at least 5-6 times a week? And for what purpose? Sports only? Whole day?

The answers will lead to whether you are suitable for daily disposables, or longer disposables (2 weeks, monthly, etc). If you are planning on wearing them occasionally for sports or going out at night, for example, I would fit you with daily disposables. If you plan on wearing them at least 5- 6 days a week, then a 2 week or monthly disposable lens would be better. This is because of the storage of the lenses. Usually the bacteriocidal effect of contact lens solution is most effective in for 24 hours only. If you wear your lenses only once a week, then you're soaking your lenses in a chemical solution for a week without any anti-bacterial function.

So think about how you want to wear your lenses before getting fitted. Also, make sure your optometrist looks at the contact lenses in your eyes during the fitting process. This is the only way to ensure a proper fit.

Hope this helps.
