Well this is a bit late I know, but if it's still a problem:
I had an umbilical hernia and wasn't keen on surgery or the long recovery; the solution (for me) was to go to the British Hernia Centre in London which specialises in a solution using a mesh ratehr than traditional suture-based surgery. The advantages are it is local anaesthetic (not general), you are in and out in a few hours, the mesh (I gather, form your own view) fails less often than suture, the recovery is much quicker than suture and it is less expensive (aruond GBP1,000 for mine, YMMV).
The downside is you go to London; of course it may be possible to get a local surgeon to use this procedure. I decided to go to BHC as they specialise and don't do anything else. When I spoke to surgeons where I am they were happy to "give it a go" but I decided against that.
Two years on no problems, back to sport etc.
