Please only think about surgery as your last resources. You could seek help from a physiotherapist of an acupuncturist.

There are a lot more conservative measures that can be taken prior to considering surgery... ie.wearing a wrist brace to allow the nerve inflammation to subside, changing your wrist mechanics and ergonomics with your activities, stretches, treatment with various modalities etc. I have seen many individuals respond well with physical or occupational therapy for carpal tunnel and avoid surgery. I have seen complications of the surgery and the surgery doesn't always work. Have you had a nerve conduction study to see how badly the nerve is compressed? That might be worthwhile. Also, sometimes the median nerve (the one effected in carpal tunnel) is compressed higher up in your extremity ie. at your elbow, shoulder or neck area and thus surgery to your wrist does not resolve the problem. So make sure to get that checked out as well. I agree with joeychan.. surgery as last resort, see a physio. If you really are leaning towards surgery, I'd get a second opinion first and I'd definately get physio after surgery - for scar care, swelling management, nerve gliding, wrist mobility, etc.
