I've been having trouble sleeping lately. Been to a clinic, but they gave me meds which I won't take. (Don't want to develop this kind of habit.) I've tried warm milk, low light conditions before bed, no computer for at least an hour before bed, and still not having much success. The doctor said it could be related to stress. Ironically, a good night's sleep would probably give me the clear mind to help solve that! Any helpful suggestions appreciated as I'm finding myself drinking more and more coffee to get through the day...

It's the coffee...cut back to one cup will do

You definitely want to cut back on your coffee and caffeine intake.
Apart from what you've already mentioned you can try reading before you go to bed, doing some kind of regular exercise (but at least 2 hours before you go to bed to be on the safe side), learning relaxation techniques e.g. yoga, aromatherapy as some scents relax you and promote sleep, and certain kinds of bedtime snacks http://www.askdrsears.com/html/4/t042400.asp
Main thing, try not to worry about it. It could be just a temporary thing and it'll go away by itself in time.

maybe you should read and listen to music(without lyrics) before you sleep. it might tire you then you will fall asleep naturally.

I haven't read in bed in a while. These days i usually fall asleep with the tele on. Simple meditation and breathing exercises sometimes help, but if i have had a super stressful day it seems nothing will work. I wont be able to concentrate on anything. I will try to cut down on the coffee. Coffee is my breakfast, i usually don't have the time to eat breakfast, nor do i feel hungry when i first wake.
What about herbal teas and acupuncture?

Actually people do occasionally go through a period of restlessness, dont worry too much about it. May I ask what is the name of the meds your doctor prescribed you? Cos those meds may not be addictive, as I have known there are some types which have the addictive chemical component removed.
Western Herbal teas ( assume caffine free) may have a relaxant effect but should be cautious with the chinese ones. I dont think acupuncture - whose nature is stimulating - helps much.
Perhaps you could do a pschological profile and find the underlying cause of your concerns?
I am not a pscyhologist but I work in the medical field, hope it helps :)

Cashews Cashews, Cashews Raw, Cashew Creams, Cashews on Salads, Cashews on Rice and ... Rest and sleep well.
They Contain a substance called Tryptophan.
it promotes the production of Serotonin and Dopamin.
Helps you relax and feel healthy. The Same is also found in Chicken, but why bother the poor chicken when you have cashews
A good anti-oxident diet will do you good.
And don't look for symptoms to gauge your health. Start living healthy and exercise, it begins with you.

I know, i know, it begins with me haha. I am trying to be more healthier and i am sleeping slightly better. If only i didn't have to work, i would sleep like a baby-i'm sure! I'm at work now...(surprise surprise) so i don't have the name of the meds on me. I'll let you know, but i really don't want to take them- even if they aren't addictive. Sleeping tablets of any form just make it a nightmare for me to wake up the next day.
Cashews - i will try! Something easy to snack on!

Also try Soaking your feet in hot water, for about 45 minutes and rinsing them with cold water.
Or do a foot sauna not sure if such a thing exists, nevertheless; Get two buckets one of hot water and the other of cold. At the ratio of 5:1 minutes Hot to Cold plunging. So 5 minutes hot water then into cold water for 1 minute. Repeat as many times you like.
Hot water advice: Place your feet in hot water, that your feet can tolerate, then increase the temp, by adding more hot water and stirring at the same time. Whatever your hand can tolerate your feet can, as a general rule.
Main point of this to increase blood circulation and help remove accumulated toxins.
Good Luck.

I read Caffeine's half life is 3 to 7 hours, so a cup of coffee too late in the afternoon can make it harder to sleep. I used to do shift work and had some coaching on sleep, they say a dark, quiet comfortable environment definitely helps, I find it true.
There are some drops that a pharmacy friend told me about before, its made of some natural mix, you put a couple of drops under your tongue and it "helps" you relax, and sleep, its not the sleeping pill, its what they sell at the airport to people who have trouble sleeping on planes. Will find out the name and let you know later.

You may be interested to know that there is a natural health centre located near the Times Square that offers a therapeutic treatment for Insomniacs. An intensive Moxibustion therapy sends qi (postive energy) into the body through dozens of
acu-points, and warms the meridians connecting these acupoints. The energy is used to detoxify the body and clear up congestions. When that takes place, the person feels totally relaxed. After a session that takes about half-an-hr., one can always get better sleep for the week that follows.
Look for "Sleeping Disorder" under "Expat Health Services".
