A podiatrist can only help alleviate the symptoms by prescribing orthotics. To treat the cause then the choice would appear to adopt an appropriate lifestyle/diet or take the meds.

Sabs, you can try traditional Chinese medicine.

eg.

You also can goole others.

Tell your husband that don't sweat too much in summer, but urinate more.

last time i checked, there is no cure for gout

it is a disease where there is too much urid acid build up in your system which your immune systems into thinking the uric acid are outside foreign germs/viruses. by attacking these uric crystals, collected around the big toe (for most folks), it causes redness, swelling and inflammation. this is what causes the excrutiating pain. a severe attack will last for 2 weeks.

as oyster and runner suggested....once you get gout, the best thing you can do is prevention.

eliminate food rich in purine.

drink plenty of water and exercise regularly to flush out the excess uric acid in your system.

see ur gp, and he may presribe for you: allopurinol (Zyloprim, Aloprim) which slow uric acid productions and Colchicine, for real bad pain.

hope that helps.

life sucks during the real severe attacks, but if u play ur cards right, it is a very controllable disease

foth,

sorry, my list is pretty comprehensive, as i don't wanna go through the hell of another severe attack again....ha ha ha

once again, moderation is the key. the list is merely a guide to assist me in mitigating the risks.

hell, a complete ban would really make life truly boring.

to tell the truth, the one that i normally violate is the alcohol....just can't avoid it...hee hee

are you taking any meds for ur gout?

Omega-3 and omega -6 are excellent natural products to reduce inflammation of the joints. Freshly ground Flaxseeds and Flaxseed Oil are an excellent source for this, as are walnuts and fish oil tablets.

Omega-3 is an amazing nutrient that you can't have enough of....it does so much for the body in prevention of disease and also recovery.

Grape seed extract is also good for reducing inflammation in the joints.

would also recommend an excellent multi vitamin and mineral supplementation along with the omega-3 and grape seed extract.

Just some alternatives to medication that may work for you.

Recurrent gout can be due to an underlying kidney condition. I would suggest that you see a doctor to make sure you don't have an underlying kidney condition.

I have had 3 major gout attacks in my life.

Its the most painfull thing in the world - even worse than a broken leg in my case !!!

Know the scene in the film Misery, where the woman breaks the guys legs with the sledgehammer ? thats how a bad gout attack feels like !!!

anyway, i have now learnt to live with it, even though there is always some pain in the toe joints.

How ?

1) drink a lot more water.

2) excercise

3)i take the "doctors choice" vitamin c500 w/bioflavonoids

occasionally i also take shark cartilage powder capsules

i always carry colchicine tablets which i take when i feel a bit of pain coming on and if so, cut down on the alcohol.

if it gets to the stage where u cant walk - go to the doctors and he can give you an injection.

hope this helps - wouldnt wish it on anyone

p.s. i still eat plenty of my favourite food - steaks !!!
