Hello,
My 11 month boy is diagnosed with an undescended testicle (it can not be felt and the ultrasound shows nothing) and he may need to have surgery (coelioscopy or laparoscopy).
Could anyone recommend a good surgeon, anesthesist or hospital for this kind of operation, in HK?
Thank you so much in advance!!!

i think it can also be done in shangai, may be you can go to SEIMC (hanghai east)in pudong they normally get the well experienced doctors.

Hi and thanks to everyone,
We met Dr Ngan this week and he confirmed the diagnosis we had in Shanghai and proposed a laparoscopy.
He's an expert in his field and a very good person.
We hesitate to go for the surgery in HK as we live in Shanghai, it will be difficult to manage, especially staying 2 weeks other there.
If we were having the operation in SHanghai, our concern would be to go through the general anesthesia required for the laparoscopy.
Anyone has a good experience with anesthesist here?
Thanks for all your reply.

Hi Shivaree, did your son end up going through with the surgery with Dr. Ngan? Our son recently saw Dr Ngan and was diagnosed with buried penis that requires surgery as well and I'd like to see how your experience was with Dr. Ngan for surgery. Hope all is well with your son!

Hi JPMM,
My son had the laparoscopy for undescended testicule with Dr. Ngan at the Sanatorium hospital in Happy valley in HK and everything went very well. I think he's an excellent surgeon and the whole medical team was great too. I highly recommend him.
Besides, it may not be of your concern, but in any case, I think it is better for your son to have the surgery when he's still "young". Our son had the procedure when he was 15 months and it seems like it is less psychologically traumatic then than for an older boy. Do not hesitate to ask if I can be of further help. Good luck and all the best for your family!

Hi Shivaree,
hopefully you are still looking at this thread. My 9 month old son has been diagnosed with inguinal hernia and we were thinking of having Dr John Ngan do the surgery for the boy. Saw that you were happy with Dr Ngan but what about the anethesist? Was he/she from Dr Ngan's suggested panel? Also, i am concerend about the effect of a GA on a young child's brain. Not sure if u had shared the same concern but would like to hear from another parent on this. Thanks!

Hi Pencil,
We were very happy with the whole team at the Sanatorium hospital, in particular with Dr Ngan and the anesthesiologist. I don't know his name but he worked with Dr Ngan on a regular basis. The main reasons we chose to fly to HK to do the surgery was because of the level of complexity of the procedure AND the risks linked to general anesthesia.
My son is now 3 year old and does not seem to have any physical or mental repercussion from the surgery he had at 15 months. He is developing very well, and is quite advanced intellectually, I might say :)
I hope this will help. Best wishes!

Our experience with Dr. Ngan was VERY different. We arranged a referred appointment with Dr Ngan for our 8 month old boy. I took a half day off from my work, and my wife, baby and I arrived early for our appointment. The doctor kept us waiting for 90 minutes, with no apologies, no explanations, and when his surgery manager opened the door to his office.....he was making telephone calls!! In our eyes, he was disrespectful and rude....he didn't even have the courage to apologize to us.

I was very impressed with Dr. Ngan, as a doctor and as a human. Top notch professional who is very busy yet approachable - he took time to answer my concerns over the phone before I even became a regular patient. Genuinely cares about his patients' well-being not only their wallets, which is rare in HK. Seen my fair share of doctors in Hong Kong, and he sticks out very positively.
