I live in Guangzhou and am looking for a Pharmacy that stocks a comprehensive range of Western medicines. Most pharmacies have a few in stock but I really require a lead to a place with a good range of stock Phil W
The differenciation between Chinese and Western pharmaceuticals is narrowing all the time. If you go into a drug store in Kansas City or a chemist shop in Liverpool today ,there is a 30+% chance that the pills you get were made in China. The Chinese FDA is licensing many 'western" drugs and as a hospital we find very few problems with the list of approved drugs, although another thread shows one problem, that of Anti-D for RH-ve mothers.
There is a large pharmacy on Beijing Lu that seems fairly comprehensive. At any pharmacy, if I don't know what the package looks like I write the chemical name on a piece of paper, the pharmacist looks it up, and shows me the options in stock. Often, there is English printed on the opposite side of the package! If a pharmacy doesn't have something, they can usually call their supplier and order it if you pay a deposit. The expat clinic, on the other hand, orders from overseas and Hong Kong as well as locally, and definitely adds a huge markup to the price. Some of the Chinese medicine is really good, especially my favorite cough syrup no narcotics but more effective than codeine.

Definitely cheaper from Australia if you have a medicare card. My mother-in-law's regular blood pressure meds can be ordered here, but at something like 10 times the cost of Aust (which offers a huge subsidy to residents).
If you get stuck, you can order online (you need to post them your original prescription): www.pharmacyonline.com.au I think is the address, great service, can post it overseas to you.
