My 3 year old daughter seems to be coughing all the time. It gets worse at night time. It also gets worse when she's got a cold/flu, but even long after other cold/flu symptoms are gone, the coughing is still remaining.
She's gone to see a pediatrician in Tokyo and London more than a couple of times, but they all said she's not asthmatic. What else can it be?
Also, who is the good doctor to see something like this? Any parents out there who's experienced the same kind of problem?
Thanks

Am thinking that around 3, a lot of children are eating
"grown up " food...how about allergy checks??
My son, when young , got a lot of inner ear infections, & after plenty of GP & paediatrician visits, some GP , who also had an interest in allergies said for us to eliminate dairy from his diet, & sure enough, very rarely from then on did he get those infections, after we cut them out of his diet.
It may not be dairy, could be all sorts of things, but perhaps worth a look..Good luck!

If they are sure he is not asthmatic, then it is probably the pollution. Does it go away on low pollution days or when you travel somewhere without Hong Kong smog? Many friends and my own family have experienced coughs, sore throats, etc that have been diagnosed as being caused by smog.

Don't get hung up on lables. Could be allergies and cow's milk is indeed a leading culprit. In spite of the commercials, cow's milk is a terrible food IMO. Could also be many unusual things so I won't into things such as GER, vascular rings and a bunch of esoteric stuff.
The money is on Pertussis (whooping cough) a underdiagnosed disease or asthma also a underdiagnosed disease. But regardless, a trial of asthma medications is in order since it would treat many causes of chronic cough. The problem is that the more common drugs (inhaled albuterol or Xoponex etc) often cause restlessness and other drugs (inhaled steroids) takes days to week to be effective.
My suggestion, try to get your hands on some albuterol or Xopenex, and ask for a "spacer device" to deliver it and see if it works. Your child may be hype uped at night but at you know what direction to head in.

I had the same problem a month ago. I left HK for 2 weeks and I was much better but once I returned, the coughing came back. Try the pear juice (with bits) sold at the Park n shop. I found that it helped. It's probably due to the pollution in HK that is causing a drip in the back of the throat and causing you to clear your throat. My doctor prescribed this nose spray, Rhinocort that also helped. Don't get the generic brand cause I found it doesn't work as well.

Two issues here: first is the cause, secondly the treatment.
If not asthma? Wel, do not trust that idea. In a trial in a clinic manyyears ago, I removed the milk from ALL wheezy coughing kids for 2 weeks, and half got better. No signs of asthma in them, but definite improvement in quality of breathing after removing one of the major causes of allergy.
Another major cause is the change of season here (weather) coupled with pollution, which gives rise to chemical irritation post-viral infection, with a cough persisting for 6-8 weeks.
Other causes too, but these are common. As for infection, an atypical pneumonia is possible, and you need to consider mycoplasma as a cause. Antibiotics (I hate to say it) may be helpful.
Treatment: clean air - buy a machine to put in the bedroom at least. Humidify air - useful, but I would prefer aroma therapy with myrrh in the solution. Try also the nice vacuum cleaner which goes through water (Osim) as it removes all dust mites, does not recycle dust, and is great to clean the air of the flat too.
Add some honey to the diet, use steam inhalation (play in the steamy bathroom for a while) and see a good paediatrician or lung specialist if symptoms persist. Roland Leung in Melbourne Plaza is excellent.

You could check out the website: www.naet.com or www.naet.com.hk the doctor in wanchai charity chu treats children with different allergies. And I think your son would benefit alot from the treatment, This is not just one off treatment for the cough, but after the treatment your son 's immune and overall fitness will improve to a greater level.

A really good doctor to see in Central is Dr David Stirling. He's in Century Square at the bottom of Lang Kwai Fung on D'Aguilar Street. Give him a call to look at your son. 2849 7822
