There isn't much info on spinal fusion options and doctors for HK, so I thought I would restart a thread as the last one expired.
I had ALIF L5-S1 preformed by Dr. Raymond Yip 3 weeks ago and so far things have been going very well. Much better recovery than so many threads and things I had read on the internet. If you ever want to get in contact please feel free to message me.

Good Day,
Do not kno if you can help - I have been having a severe pain/ache in my left buttock NOW for two weeks. Had X RAY, MRI done which shows nothing only a minor degenerate of lower lumber disc (very minor). Any suggestions as to what to do and research ?

Sorry to hear...I am no Dr. So can’t give that kind of advice. I had a broken pars with grade 2 spondy. Treated conservatively,, but eventually Fusion was the only option. I did lots of research before the op. There are different techniques and procedures. For single level S1-L5, ALIF with Dr Yip seemed the best idea.. 5 weeks out now and no regrets so far...amazing surgeon.

Just curious as to why you went with the ALIF instead of Total Disc Replacement?

Thanks. The difference is that disc replacement is a real option if your spine is otherwise OK and the disc degeneration is the primary problem. If the disc degeneration is as a result of spondylolisthesis caused by something like a broken pars section, then the primary issue is the spondy, in which case disc replacement on its own is not going to work. Fusion is then the likely best option. For L4-L5 and S1-L5 single level fusion my reasearch suggested that ALIF was a better option than PLIF because the lordosis can be corrected better and there is no cutting and moving of spinal muscles and nerves respectively. I imagine for disc replacement at those levels Anterior approach is possibly better for the same reason- but I didn’t research disc replacements...good luck
