Vaccinations

We currently live in the US - are Austalian and moving to Hong Kong. Each country (OZ and the US)and even states here in the US - have their own rules and exemptions on vaccinations. Can any body share with me what is recommended for Hong Kong - given that it is Buddist country, do they believe in vaccinations?

Vaccinations are usually regarded as a medical, not religious matter. The differences between countries reflect both a differing pattern of disease within the country (range of vaccinations) and a differing approach to assaulting the childhood immune system with vaccines which require an immune response. There is no real hard-and-fast rule as to when to vaccinate.


Try looking at the CDC (Read More) for their vaccine information booklet in pdf form, and that will give you a lot of information. There is no special requirement for vaccination in HK. It would be sensibnle to be covered for Hep A/B, tetanus and typhoid. Make sure your childhood vaccinations are up to date - polio even for adults.

Funny you mention Japanese encyphalitis. We just went to Kaiser Permanente with the kids in anticipation of moving to GZ next month. They insisted on Japanese e. when they found out we were going to southern China. And I was in GZ two weeks ago, popped down to HK and saw all those signs too.

The government vaccination schedule for children is not different from the Australian schedule (Diphteria, Tetanus, Polio and Hepatitis B) other vaccinations recommended are Hepatitis A.


Local people are all vaccinated against Tuberculosis, however this is not needed for adult expatriates.


Vaccinations agianst Rabies, Typhoid or Japanese Encephalitis are not recommended for living in HK, but may be needed when travelling in the region.

People certainly have difference in opinions with respect to vaccinations. I'm respectful if you have done all your research and feel comfortable with your decision.


How many people do not vaccinate their children living in Honk Kong. It is a growing trend in Australia, USA and the UK. The risks of these drugs can far out way the possibility of even catching the disease. Vaccinations dont prevent the disease but apparently just make the symptons a little less.


I'm just wanting to here from those that have said NO and live in Hong Kong.

Hi Hehyde,

Acutally plenty of us say NO.

We all tend to be a bit underground about it because the minute you mention it (like in Australia and other places) you tend to be howled down, told how irresponsible you are and all the other rhetoric insults that go with it.

So I just tend to do my own thing and say little.

LAH - we are Australian and have lived in the US for the last 6 years. Our children are not vaccinated... and I'm just hoping to meet other parents who share the same views. I totally understand your comments.... its a very sensitve topic.

Yes, we are not vaccinated in our family either (and I hope there are no slanderous comments to follow this post). After much research and a background in medicine, we are comfortable with our decision. Interesting though, this HK underground. Kind of like the whole notion of homeschooling in Hong Kong.

My children go to an Inernational school and I have never had a problem.

In fact from my understanding the schools can not stop a child from attending due to non vaccination because it is a discrimination issue.

That said..I have never had an issue.

I am not sure what the situation is with local and ESF schools.
