Fertility

I have the opportunity to transfer permanently to HK at the start of January 07 but I am having second thoughts as my wife and I are having problems conceiving (low follicle count). As we are 34 and 37 years old, does anyone have any advice as to whether it would make more sense to stay in London for treatment, or if the standard of treatment in HK is just as good?

I don't know about the standard of treatments in comparison to London, but definitely you would have LOTS more options and "new alternatives" in HK, and probably cheaper. There is always the Chinese Herbal way too that is safe, cheaper, but longer term.

You may consider TCM, including Acupuncture and Herbal as an alternative but effective method. You may visit Quality Chinese Medical Centre, which has a strong refernece in this area. Thewphone for enquiry is 28818267. Web site is www.qualitytcm.com

I've never had fertility treatment in UK but have had treatment in Hong Kong. I have mixed views!

- Getting an appointment in Hong Kong is easy (Private) and you can be seen quickly. It's very convenient.

- Equipment used is very up to date.

- Not as many options available if you require an egg or sperm donor (I believe would have to be imported - costly!)

- With regards to Private treatment. Most of the fertility docs are gyno/obs. I question from my own experience, the exposure they are getting on a daily basis with regards to dealing with infertility. I have felt that's it's been a very expensive trial and error!

- The support is limited. Going thru IVF is stressful and there's no one to turn to for support. UK I believe, offer that emotional support!

- It's expensive, for IVF/ICSI it can cost around HK$90K a cycle. Not sure how this compares to UK? I expect some of the top UK clinics are probably slightly less/same.

I'm not sure by your wife's low follicle count if u have already had treatment in UK such as IVF? The location choice would really depend on the extent of the problems. Personally I would consult with a fertility doctor in London first and see what your options are.

Feel free to PM if you need any further info.

London will be a better bet as most of my friends with similar medical conditions failed in HK, worked in London.

Many thanks for your replys.

Will find out more about our true "state" of fertilty soon and will discuss what our options are then. The follicle test showed 6 follicles, 2 large. Perhaps we wil only need fertility tablets? Either way will post a message when we get some some more news. Feel free to come back to me with any further info you may have. Thanks.

Hi Marklid

Maybe your wife has been taken Clomid (tablets), in which case the response in my humble opinion is not too bad. I'm sure the specialist will test your wife's FSH level (normally on cycle day 3). From this they can tell the age of the eggs. If your wife's FSH is high, then I personally would be in London for the treatment. I believe ARGG and Lister are good clinics if not the best in UK. Good luck
