Wisdom Tooth -Dentist or Dental Surgeon?

A good dentist should be able to deal with wisdom tooth extractions.

My daughter had 2 wisdom teeth removed here at Christmas by our dentist. She had a light sedation and didn't remember much of it all all. Do you have a dentist? We use Dr Dickson Pin in the Shui On Centre. 28028108

Dentist and Dental Surgeon are the same. Dental Surgeon is a British title for dentist.

Oral and maxillofacial Surgeon is a specialist. If the wisdom tooth is lying horizontal or close to a nerve, a specialist is a better choice.

Hope this helps.

Both my own dentist and my son's pediatric dentist suggested I get my wisdom teeth removed by an oral surgeon and not a dentist - the reason being, oral surgeons do this everyday whilst some dentists may not. I had all 4 wisdom teeth removed in one sitting by an oral surgeon, it took 40 minutes altogether and I had absolutely no swelling the other day.

Dear Raincatcher:

You may want to get a second opinion after your first consultation. the fees and qualifications varies a lot in HK. Don't go to mainland China for any dental work! They may be cheaper but if anything goes wrong, you are out of luck.

Good luck!

Dr K L Yip (I think his first name is Daniel), his clinic is at Luk Yowe Tong (sp) on Queen's Road Central. He's very arrogant but very good.

Let me know if you can't find his details through 1081 and I'll hunt them down for you.

I had them removed summer 2004 and I think he normally charges HK$4,000 per tooth. He charged me a little less as I'm family friends with my regular dentist who in turn is friends with Dr Yip. I think I paid a total of around HK$12,000 for all 4 teeth (he charged HK$1,000 for one of them as there wasn't anything wrong with that one but as the corresponding one on the top had to be removed, the bottom one would have no antagonist). 1 of them was coming out horizontally and the other 2 would be coming out horizontal as well (he does an x-ray) so he had to cut through the gum for 2 of them.

As I've said, he's very arrogant but he's very good. I had no swelling the next day at all and I could talk properly ie people didn't realize anything was wrong with me unless they were talking to me face to face as my mouth wasn't moving much.

Dear Raincatcher:

Why go to someone arrogant(also his staff) when you have plenty nice ones to choose from. I recommend Dr. Edward Hui in Central. He is very nice and very professional. His office phone nunber is 2851-4888.

Dear Raincatcher:

It depends on the degree of difficulties of the extraction but I think the price may be similiar. Sorry, I don't know the fees since everyone is different. Its important that you feel comfortable with the oral surgeon and office staff. As far as I am concerned, there is no place for arrogance in a health care setting!

I wouldn't see Dr Yip unless you are sure you need his services. I would suspect his consultation fees will be higher than your dentist and your dentist should be able to tell you whether or not your wisdom teeth will be a problem.

I would recommend Dr Edward Hui ( oral maxillofacial surgeon ) as well. Most GP will take out wisdom tooth, the most important thing is they should know their limit and know when to refer. Some wisdom teeth are so easy to take out that you don't really need a specialist. Check w your dentist and see what he recommends.
