Last year my kid came down with a flu -- high fever, achey, very sudden onset -- you know what I mean. I took her to the doc, he said it was flu and prescribed tamiflu. The next day she was so much better I couldn't believe it. In fact, I told him she must not have had flu because she got better so fast and had virtually no fever within about 12 hours! She was able to return to school after only about 24 hours. He replied that she did have flu and that's how tamiflu works against it. I was amazed. I had heard it said that tamiflu cuts symptoms and length of time in half, but this was like just wiped it out. But there's a big IF. I've also read that in order for it to work, you have to start the med within 24 hours of onset of symptoms. Any longer than this, and the flu is too well established in the body for it to do any good. If you were given tamiflu more than 24 hrs after onset of symptoms, then I'd question whether or not to take it because there are some risks associated with it, I understand.

Thanks Green and Meiquoren for your replies.

Well unluckily was prescribed both medications has had the flu + bronchities. Still have a runny nose sort of, achy and a slight fever has just remained. Guess will take longer time to recover!

Tamiflu does not really work. In the literature (read it in the fine print) it states: "the mean duration to cessation of symptoms however in comparison to placebo shows no appreciable difference" Tamiflu in studies, shortened an influenza A from 10 illness down to 9.5 days on average - ie it is ineffective. So your child did not have 'flu, but probably a viral URTI.

Well, my child is asthmatic and has severe allergies. She tends to get very severe upper respiratory infections which are not easy to treat and which progress to bronchitis, pneumonia or severe sinusitis. In this case, the rapid recovery from a virus that at first knocked her flat seemed rather miraculous.

Antibiotics when taken should be completed as prescribed. Bacteria otherwise would have an opportunity to become resistant, reducing antibiotic efficacy the next time or for other patients. Tamiflu is an anti-viral agent typically prescribed for Influenza. It is partially effective when given early on. It does not work for other viral infections such as common cold etc. Remember, Flu is a self-limiting disease, Tamiflu is not always essential to be given.

Occasionally, when the diagnosis is unclear, and the risks to the patient (already sick for other reasons, low immunity, etc) a doctor may prescribe both as an ‘umbrella’ treatment; to catch all!

It's been over a month and still not 100%. Been to another doctor and keep getting antibiotics! Dr's prescribe like it's candies! Thinking of alternate medicine and doing research. Anyone can recommend or know a lung specialist?

I have not taken Tamiflu but I use Relenza anothe anti viral. It is an amazing drug.

It is not true that you don't need antibiotics with certain flu strains. If you have secondary infections then of course you will need antibiotics especially if you are an asthmatic as I am.

Thanks to this thread, I've decided to take vitamin C! I've always relied on lots of fresh produce before, but right now I've been on antibiotics that don't seem to be shaking the illness. It has rebounded twice, both times after I completed the full course of antibiotics. My doctor has switched antibiotics each time, now has done blood tests and CAT scan which shows I need the antibiotic but it's just not knocking it out completely. I think part of the problem is the GZ air, and it's time to take major action to boost my immune system! Any other great ideas besides the large doses of vitamin C, healthy food, and lots of water? Anyone here use spirulina, can you get that in HK? What about the various kinds of seaweeds? I'm very reluctant to mix Chinese herbal medicine with western medicine since, after all, they are all chemicals and could interact.
