Jailbreak an HK iPhone? (from a non-techie person)

Sorry for the remedial question! I bought my iPhone 4 at 3 a few months ago. We're travelling to Thailand & I want to buy a local sim card there. Do I need to jailbreak my iPhone first or are the iPhones sold in Hong Kong already unlocked?

Jailbreaking and unlocking are 2 different things. HK iPhones are all sold unlocked and you can just slip in a SIM card and away you go.

Thanks! That answers my immediate question, but now I'm curious -- What is the difference between jailbreaking and unlocking?

not an expert but it seems to me jailbreaking enables the owner to acces files outside of itunes and also install 3rd party software not approved by apple. Unlocking on the other hand allows the owner to use the iphone using any carrier (e.g. if your phone is locked to AT&T only, you can only use AT&T's sim card and services).
