Just got my first Kindle (the new version 3) and love it. It will save kilos in weight when I'm on holiday.
Does anyone have an update on where to buy a kindle cover - I foolishly forgot to order this at the same time as the kindle. The WCCC shop sounds a good bet but does anyone know of a definite place to get a cover?

No responses - never mind. I ended up going to Wanchai Computer Centre. The two bag specialist shops do not stock Kindle covers. I bought a small generic cover for HK$75. It does the trick.

I'm getting one for my girlfriend, it's arriving this week. How's the generic cover working out for you? I didn't order one either, it felt like a ripoff.
My girlfriend is probably going to knit a cover for hers, though. She's already covered our portable hard drives and game consoles in knitting.

The cover is fine. It's just something to protect it a bit if I travel with it. Not the type that acts as a permanent cover/wrapper. Apparently it is waterproof...but I won't be checking that.
A knitted cover sounds fun. Probably delivers just as much protection.

Ah, got it, you got an all-purpose gadget cover then. I agree that the official Kindle covers look nice, but I didn't think it was worth springing for one.
How's whispernet for browsing the web?

Web browsing is slow and clunky. I really only use it for reading stuff thought I did manage to copy some music over.
My brother has recently emailed me MOBI files of a few (new) books and a couple of comics. Worked a treat - just dragged them on to the Kindle from my Mac. Formatting seems perfect and cost was $0. No idea where he got them from. I'm sure he must have paid for them...

As mentioned browsing is pretty worthless. The primary purpose it to download Kindle content.
Kindle can handle quite a few formats. You can also use the fantastic free Calibre software to convert pretty much any text format to Kindle (or other device). It also manages your library.

I've never been able to afford any other type of mobile internet (yeah, a poor expat in HK, whodathought) so being able to browse wikipedia from anywhere at no cost has been awesome. Although I'm actually reading more books now that I can get lots of them for free thanks to expired copyrights (manybooks.net, great resource if you don't want to go through Amazon's 1-click for free books). Just finished Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, and am now on Sherlock Holmes.

I just got myself a Kindle 3 and also forgot to order a cover and after googling a bit I found myself on this forum. Anyway, through some searching I found an online HK store that sells kindle covers. Just ordered it so not sure how the quality will be like but you might want to check it out. Website is: www.ids.hk
Hope this helps!

I got my Kindle, and my girlfriend knit a cover for it using old wool scraps. It looks really funny, and it does its job.
Loving the Kindle, though. I'm surprised that I find myself reading free Gutenberg project books a lot more with it than browsing the web.

Just an update on the cover. I got my kindle cover a few days after ordering it from IDS, it does not look as good as the ones they sell in amazon but it's much much cheaper so I'm quite satisfied with it. Loving the kindle too.. I bring it with me everywhere!

The pre-Christmas Kindle order for my father turned up at last. So off to to Wanchai Computer Centre to find some kind of protective cover. Success beyond my wildest dreams awaited me. Kindle has reached WCC! I found a small range of Kindle covers (for the Kindle 3) in Comdex Computer, Shop 123-124 (second floor). I got a purple one and a black one at HK$135 each. They look and feel fine.

Great tip! Got my Kindle 3 a few days ago. I did get the Belkin sleeve and it is great but I am always looking for new solutions. :)

There are transparent covers on Amazon for use on the beach. They protect against sand/water. For example http://www.amazon.com/M-Edge-Leisure-Kindle-Display-Generation/dp/B00492CAI0/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1297121836&sr=8-4.

Got my first kindle (3) and ordered simple brown leather cover with it. The kindle is a small miracle, and the cover is well made and sturdy...worth the extra few pennies. Have read online that the device my flip out of the cover at times putting stress on the mounting pins...solution; glue on velcro tabs to secure.
