If your emp

Oyer sponsored your employment visa they will be liable for any outstanding income tax you owe if you leave HK. Also if you have been terminated your visa may no longer be valid

BumpyDog is definitely mistaken on the visa issue. It's valid until it's expiry date (if you don't get a new sponsor, as I assume it's a work visa?).

I left Hong Kong before and didn't have any problem with my last paycheck. It's the first time I heard of this requirement (IRD letter of release?).

In my view this is not a problem. Just talk to IRD and your employer (i.e. tell IRD your employer needs this letter. Tell your employer IRD says there's no need, etc...). Whatever the case, please post the outcome for other expats' info.
