Hi everyone,

My partner and I are really keen to live in Hong Kong. We're both Asians living and working in Australia, and we'd love to experience this part of the world whilst we're still young and without kids. :)

Ideally, I would be working (taking $80k+ HKD/month, with no other allowances) and my partner won't be working.

I currently have a mortgage in Australia and would need to send back approximately $15,000HKD/month to cover it.

We don't party, drink alcohol or eat at fancy restaurants all the time. Local hawker food is good for us!

A neat/tidy 2-3 bedroom apartment (preferably newish with gym/pool etc) would be perfect. No car required either.

Is there enough left over to have a comfortable lifestyle, whilst also exploring this magnificent part of the world on my salary alone?

Is this remotely possible? I look forward to your replies and hopefully you have some good news!

Kind Regards.

Yes, you could cover your mortgage back in Australia (you can rent it out too if possible) and still maintain a very comfortable life in Hong Kong.

Thanks for the reply, punter. I definitely would be renting out my property in Aus and that's accounted for in the 15k figure quoted. That leaves approximately $65k for rent and living expenses.

Would that be enough for a "comfortable" lifestyle for two people?

How much would rent cost for what we require?

Kind Regards.

3 bedrooms is extremely extravagant for a couple in HK! Just try for a one bedroom plus study or similar on your budget.

65k for two people is still a lot living a life you described in your original post.

In Hong Kong because there are many choices of living accomodations, you can actually find something that can be walking distance away from work (it depends on what kind of work/business you to do). Maybe you start with a two bedroom flat first that can range from 10-30k/month. As you can see, the range is quite wide. And this is the biggest expense you'll have. Try to read some of the threads regarding living here in Hong Kong and you'll have an idea on the details.

Thanks for all your responses. Which suburb would you recommend which has good access to the airport? Not Tung Chung.

Not really relevant but I'm just curious as to the peculiarities of the Australian property market. You're saying that if you rent your property out it still leaves you 15,000 per month short on the mortgage payments? What's going on in Aus?

Maybe they are paying double payments like a lot of Aussie pats do.

We paid our mortgages off during our first 3 years of living in Hong Kong. This all seems fair enough to me, most married professional Aussies invest what they would ordinarily have lost in Aussie income taxes in property, investments of some kind, here, or back home. What is strange about that, Dipo ?
