Hello. My wife and baby son will be soon moving to HK. I will be working in ShaTin. I get an allowance of $8000HK p/ m for accomodation. Happy to contribute extra. What are the best places to live? Heard Sai Kung is great and better value for $. Happy to commute if reasonable time/ distance. Any advice welcomed.

living somewhere along the mtr (train/subway) line would give your wife and son more mobility around hk since you are new to town.
sai kung is nice but it is quite a commute to shatin unless you will be driving. from what i know, there is a bus that goes to shatin. it provides a nice community of international families for your wife and son to socialize with though.
fotan's royal ascot has nice recreational facilities and is above a supermarket and a small shopping center. they have shuttle buses to shatin station and is walking distance from the fotan station. there is also a new estate called palazzo right across from the fotan station.
shatin station has a big shopping mall called new town plaza that has everything shopping need you might want. above the shopping mall there are quite a few housing complexes, but i believe their sizes are not very large and prices would also be quite high due to convenience.
tai wai is one station away from shatin. the apartments there are quite old and not very spacious, but you might look into some village houses there.
there are also some other estates that are spacious but they don't run along the train line. you might have to connect with a mini bus to the train station.
so really depends how willing you are to travel. with $8000, you won't be able to get much as prices are soaring. you'll most likelyl need to contribute extra.
cheaper options are a few more stations away from shatin in tai po, and ma on shan.
good luck!

I'd say Tai Wai, a mix of smaller and larger apartments there and a lot of village houses and quite a few expats in the area. There's even a couple of bars frequented by the expats. Would be the easiest place to settle down in Shatin. One stop from Shatin central in one direction, Kowloon Tong in the other and a hub for buses all over HK.
