Calling Internationally

We call our son regularily .... He was in New York and PCCW (060) it would cost us about 0.18 to 0,23 per minuite. He did not have to pay any charges from his mobile service provided in New York. He has recently moved to UK and call charges are now 4.50/min. and we are told that is because of the charges by mobile service provider in UK. If he uses his mobile to call us in Hong Kong it costs him the same or more. It seems that the mobile service providers (ALL) are ripping off their clients. Does anyone have a solution for this.

Hi Krips,

If you and your son have smartphones (ie. android or iphones), then you may want to make use of "viber" or "tango" which could be downloaded free from Android market or the App store. Using wifi or 3G connection, you can use viber (voice only) or Tango (have video call) to call your son where ever he is. Both of you must arranged on the the time to call to ensure that you are connected to a wifi connection if you don't have 3G data plan.

Unfortunately I do not have an iphone or android. Even if I buy one I believe using the 3G the data usage will cost me as much as the charges by the mobile phone co. in UK (rip-off agents)

You use the internet to call via mobile, you need to have a wireless connection so it does not use the 3G network. There are many providers that can do this for free. You can use Skype. Check out my posting here for one idea.

Hong Kong has many IDD providers, try New World Telecom IDD 009. They have good rates, checkout their website.

I regularly use skype to phone my relatives back home. If they are at home its not only free but you can also do video calling.

If they are not at home then the cost from Skype is a lot cheaper than from my mobile, and same for them.

They also have package deals for the UK (where you pay a monthly fee for a set number of mins free or unlimited calls).
