Bat Mitzvah gifts

I have no idea of what to get a friends daughter for this ceremony. I just googled and found that this is a very important occasion.

Any one with any ideas would be appreciated.

A Bat Mitzvah is celebrating her entry into adulthood, she has studied very hard to learn about Judaism, and will recite a passage for the Torah in Hebrew.


Give her an 'adult' gift.


Been to many in USA, and some in HK.


In the USA, if you are a close friend or family, it is common to give money towards the college fund, plus something sentimental if you know she would like it.


In HK, most well-off expat families are not concerned about college funds. I have given special books I knew they would enjoy, gift certificates to spas and clothing stores, invitations to special events, movie vouchers, etc... In HK, I would not go over the top in expense unless you are a very good friend of the family and have the means to do so, it is not really expected.


My suggestion is ASK YOUR FRIEND - the parents should have an idea of what their daughter likes. A spa certificate, a manicure certificate for 2 (so she can bring a friend), HMV certificate, an IPOD or phone accessory she wants, something special and fun.


I would avoid giving a 'jewish' gift if you are not jewish - she probably has enough star of dabvis and symbols from her grandparents and aunties.


Whatever you give, include a nice card that says why the gift is for her, welcome her to the adult world this way!


Enjoy the ceremony and party, it is great fun, and as she stands there reading the Torah you will probably be impressed by how mature she is - it is a hard earned and well deserved celebration!
