Why waste your time, Ed. The only people that care about this are the reporter and his boss. And they're not in it for the story...

Let's just keep breeding, maintain economic growth and trying to buy another property for ourselves.

I'm alright, Jack.

There are many families that live like this in HK, including multi-member (6+) in 400sq ft sized public housing units. It would be interesting to put a number on them.

Approx. 40%+ of the population lives in public housing. Fortunately, the public housing units are slightly larger. Unfortunately, the wait for one is an extensive number of years.

Roughly 50% of Hong Kongers live in HEAVILY subsidized housing. About 2/3 of all Hong Kongers pay NO TAX. Everyone gets FREE state of the art healthcare. Everyone is entitled to FREE high quality public education. For roughly $500 USD, one can import an 'around the clock' maid/slave to do all the work for you. Just last year the government handed out $6000 to every resident. Transportation is subsidized for the poor, as it food.

Yet, all I read about is how the poor in Hong Kong have it so bad? Huh? Anyone who is willing to work hard can easily make it here. It is only the those who were or are unwilling to work that seem to complain about HK conditions. Hong Kong gives its residents everything for free, yet they complain. This is the problem with welfare states......the people always want more....never enough.

cara, I guess I don't understand what more the "poor" in hong kong want? I think we can all agree that Hong Kong provides some incredibly high quality healthcare and education for all its citizens. The transportation system is cheap/efficient (arguably the best in the world). The only complaint would be the size of the housing, but in comparison to the middle or upper class, the poor get relative good accomidation. I pay over 35K for a 1300 sq ft flat, and the public housing down the street is about 1/3 the size, yet only costs under 2K.

I think people look at income disparity and the 'widening' income gap....but what really matters is the overall quality of life. And their isn't that big a difference between the rich and poor in hong kong (relative to other nations/states).
