I'd like the children to attend some public speaking lessons or course? Anyone had experience of this for English speakers?

Agree with Softy, all the kids I know are absolutely terrified of public speaking!( adults included )

Jack Dandy,

The kids are 10, 8 and almost 6. Just want a fun activity for them to be confident when they have to speak in public - I can teach them at home but was looking for something more fun for them.

You can invite some of their classmates to have some home parties or story sharing. Let them feel comfortable at home with other kids first. And then start to go for playground or arrange some acitives with other parents, let them feel nice to speak with their friends in public spaces and start to get use with other adults also.

take it step by step and no hurry. be patient when they try to tell you something. If need to correct them, just let them finish first. That always help them no worry to afraid say wrongly.

And sure to enroll some sports also help.

I teach speech and drama privately and generally do a combination of speech exercises including diction and poetry delivery - combined with some fun drama exercises promoting movement and expression. Can be for exam support or general confidence. Not suitable for speech impediments however.

Meier, can you leave details to contact for arranging a group family lesson. I have taught the kids at home lots of things (I am a trained teacher) and in fact this last nine weeks we have done family things the enitre time with no booked activities. They all speak perfect english (aussie/brit parents) and have done presentations in front of their classmates and school assembly with no problems, just looking at helping them to understand the finer points of diction, pacing, delivery, body language etc - and I'd love to sit in and learn something too. We are on HK island south side - but can travel to you. Listening skills are also something that they can all do with improving as well (can't we all). So it would be good to do this as a group and for them to take turns appreciating each others efforts.

Ness, apologies for delayed response. Have been out of the country. I could certainly put together an interesting programme of mime, movement, drama pieces etc., as well as general speech and diction practice. Do call or leave message at 2585 3856.

Would need to know number and age of children. Siblings don't always interact well in a drama scenario so I would have to know some background info such as favourite activities, books, tv programmes etc., to hold their interest.

Dear Ness,

Kids' Gallery in Coda Plaza (Central) Tel. 2501-4842 has several fun courses on public speaking and drama. They also have a center in Kowloon. My 11 year old daughter has been going there for several years and loves it. I agree with those respondents who encourage you to start your kids early. The only way to overcome the fear of public speaking is to do it.

Ness, if you are still looking for public speaking experiences for your children, there is a very encouraging Speech Festival coming up. I teach public speaking at Brandon Learning Centre and, of all the Speech Festivals I have experienced, this is the most encouraging. The whole ethos is that children should be celebrated for taking part and all the participants get a medal. The poems aren't too challenging and you can have fun preparing together as a family. The website is recital.com.hk.
