I intend to tackle two hiking trips this year, one to Cambodia and another to Laos. I accept that public transport will be required to cover the longer distances, where there is difficult terrain and/or not much to see, but would like to walk around 20km daily whenever possible.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to where to go, what to see and possibly, advise on where useful information might be obtained?

i just came from cambodia, did 1500k on a motorbike through the remote north east areas.
there is really nothing to see while walking, burnt forests. and no, i am not joking. very long distance between towns as well. on the normal roads would be suicide and boring. on the alternate roads you need a guide. there are no real maps available.
if you want to do any walking in cambodia you probably should stay in the south in the cardamon mountains and along the coast in the west.
20k per day may not get you far. often there won't be any real towns at that distance, and with no khmer speaking ability this may be a struggle when you go looking for lodging etc.

Many thanks Rasbro. Very useful advice. Motorbiking might be another option worth me considering but is it possible to hire anything bigger than the 100cc Japanese scooters that most peple in SE Asia ride, which might be economical and ideal for city use and travelling short distances but a bit of an ordeal for a journey of any length.
